“Jack he’ll be fine. He’s a survivor.” Tosh said over a quick pasta dish she rustled up for herself and Jack.
“I know it’s just… I’m here with you, Gwen has Rhys and Owen has, well whoever he picks up, and it’s just…”
“Not fair.” Tosh finished for him. Jack nodded solemnly.
“Can I ask something? But first promise you won’t get angry.” Tosh asked taking the empty dishes to the sink.
“I promise.” Jack said following her.
“It’s about Lisa, you…you wouldn’t have shot him would you?”
Jack shook his head “No, I don’t think I would have.”
“Think?” Tosh asked gently turning on the water.
“I don’t want to think about it.” Jack answered, Tosh took this for what it was and started washing up.
“Let me do that, you go and have a shower or something.”
“Always the gentleman.” Tosh said flicking suds at him and went off to get a shower.
Jack sighed and went about the mindless task of washing up. He found it quite calming, his mind was left to go into standby as he washed the cutlery, the plates and finally the pans. Taking a dishcloth to dry he wondered if Ianto found such a menial task about the Hub as calming. Breaking the lull in his periodic moment of peace, Jack’s mind was brought back to Ianto: black and blue in a hospital room, scared and alone.
“You do brooding very well, but I don’t suppose you need me to tell you that.” Tosh said from the doorway. Jack turned sharply looking like a rabbit caught in the headlights, Tosh smiled at the image.
“Sorry Tosh I was spacing, what did you say?”
“Oh I think your thoughts were very much centred on one person.” Tosh smiled knowingly and went to get a bottle of wine, white of course, “Can I tempt you?” she asked waving it side to side by the neck.
“No thanks, if something was to happen I’ll need a clear head.” Jack said and went back to drying.
“He put you down as his emergency contact didn’t he?” Tosh said getting a glass. Jack nodded as he stacked the plates and pans on the counter top.
“Leave them, go and get a shower.” Tosh said crossing the kitchen to Jack’s side
“I’ve nothing to wear.” Jack said in all honesty.
“Put a dressing gown of mine on and I’ll shove these in the wash for tomorrow.” Tosh said.
“Thanks Tosh.” Jack said hugging her, “And no peaking.” he smiled leaving the kitchen
“Don’t call me Ianto.” Tosh said filling her glass.
~…~
“Tosh I look ridiculous.” Jack said in her longest dressing gown, which was up his arms and mere centimetres away from verging on indecent exposure.
“Sling this around you then.” Tosh said chucking a throw at him. Jack swapped clothing, using the throw as a kilt.
“Much better.” Jack said as he entered the living room.
“Can’t argue myself.” Tosh said as she mapped Jacks body.
Jack smiled devilishly at her and took a seat beside her.
“So where am I sleeping tonight?”
“Wherever you want, I trust you.” Tosh answered, “Mind you I may kick you during the night.”
Jack looked curiously at her.
“Nightmares… cannibals. I’ll be fine, I didn’t have any when we stopped at Ianto’s.” she mused
“Ianto didn’t either.” Jack recollected, remembering how calm and safe Ianto had been in his arms, “Do you want me to sleep with you? In your bed I mean.” Jack added hastily
“Well there are advantages to having a big, burly hunk in my bed I suppose.” Tosh replied grinning wickedly.
“Chase away the nightmares?” Jack asked.
“Would you mind?” Tosh asked becoming vulnerable instantly.
“Not at all.”
~…~
“NURSE! NURSE!” Jack shouted as he all but tore the door of Ianto’s room as he exploded into the corridor, “Where is the patient who was in this room last night? His name’s Ianto, Ianto Jones.” Jack demanded.
“Jack calm down, he’s probably gone off for tests that’s all.” Tosh said desperately.
“Well we erm…” one of the nurses started “Maybe I should get the ward sister to tell you.”
“Yeah you do that.” Jack snarled.
“Jack be nice they’re just doing their job.” Tosh chastised pulling him away from the desk.
The nurse came back with the ward sister then scampered away.
“What can I do for you?” she asked.
“The patient here last night, Ianto Jones where is he?”
“Mr Jones has been transferred.” she replied simply and calmly.
“Where?” Tosh asked, acting as the ‘good cop’.
“The psychiatric ward. He wasn’t sleeping and he kept rocking back and forth with that coat in his hands.”
“So you banged him into the nut house?” Jack demanded maintaining his urge to shake the woman.
Tosh rolled her eyes and glared at Jack.
“It was merely a precaution, he’s in a private room like you requested earlier yesterday, and under 24 hour surveillance. After he has he tests and has some rest then we’ll take it from there.”
“Which room is it?” Tosh asked.
~…~
“Can you believe those idiots locked him up?” Jack hissed down the corridor full off rage
“Jack you need to calm down now! Your not going to help Ianto being in that state and they probably wont even let you see him if you don’t.” Tosh said forever the voice of reason.
~…~
“We’re here to see a patient, Ianto Jones we believe he was transferred here last night, would we be able to see him?” Tosh kindly asked one of the nurses as Jack glowered at them all.
“Oh yes Ianto, the one with the coat, he’s not here at present.”
“Well where in the hell is he?” Jack angrily burst out.
Tosh turned and glared murder at him if he didn’t calm down, “I’m sorry it’s been a long few days for us all.” Tosh said apologetically.
“He’s having a head CT at the moment. He should be back within the hour” the nurse replied to Tosh.
“Is it possible we could wait for him there?” Tosh asked, noting it was only quarter past the hour.
“Certainly, just follow the red line and ask there.” the nurse said with a smile.
“Thank-you.” Tosh said and ushered Jack out of the ward.
“Jack I know you’re upset but you need to calm down. They are only acting in Ianto’s best interests.” Tosh said in a hushed voice as they were in the corridor.
“But why didn’t they tell me! Not only has he been alone, he’s been alone and probably convinced he belongs in a mental institution.”
“Jack! Ianto is going to be fine. You need to pull yourself together before you see him, he doesn’t need you worrying him.”
Jack paced the width of the hall a few times, knowing Tosh was right but needed to at least try work off some of the excess anger before they found Ianto.
“Right are you calmer?” Tosh asked when Jack stopped, he nodded, “Now let’s go.”
~…~
“Hi, we’re looking for Ianto Jones, we were told he was having a head CT.” Tosh said upon arrival.
“He’s just consulting with the doctor now, he should be out soon enough.”
“Can we go in?” Jack asked immediately nervous.
“You’ll have to knock first but it shouldn’t be a problem.” the nurse said and pointed them in the right direction.
Jack knocked on the door before entering, Tosh waited outside.
“I’m sorry sir, are you lost?” the doctor said taking down Ianto’s head scans from the illuminated board.
“He’s with me, this is Jack.” Ianto answered.
“I see…” the doctor drew out and looked Jack up and down, “I’ll have someone take you back upstairs.” the doctor said and turned to leave.
“I can do it.” Jack said quickly.
“If you’d prefer Mr Jones?”
“Yes.” Ianto said, the doctor nodded and left.
“Ianto I’m so sorry I left, I didn’t know you’d been moved. Then I couldn’t find you, and we’ve been on a wild goose chase all morning.” Jack said very quickly before lunging at Ianto and pulling him into a hug.
“Jack I’m fine, I just had…it happened.” Ianto said clinging to Jack’s embrace.
“What did the doctor say?” Jack asked eagerly pulling back to see Ianto’s face.
“There’s no damage, blood clots etc. Just a hairline fracture which should heal easily enough on its own.”
Jack pulled him closer again, knocking the wind out of Ianto in the process.
“And the X-rays?” Jack asked.
“A few bruised ribs, no internal damage again, I’ve been ordered bed rest when I’m discharged.”
“I’m so glad to hear you’re alright, you have no idea.” Jack told him.
Tosh knocked on the door “Can I come in?”
“Yeah come in.” Ianto answered after a moment of searching Jack’s eyes.
“Hey, good news?” Tosh asked timidly with a shy smile.
“I’m going to be fine, I’ve been ordered to bed rest. I do believe I can say ‘I told you so’” Ianto smiled.
“You dare.” Tosh waned and ruffled Ianto hair, as Jack was still clung to him.
~…~
“Can he be discharged now sister?” Tosh asked once they back up at Ianto’s ward.
“As soon as we get the doctors approval.”

“You could just sign yourself out you know.” Jack said on Ianto’s bed watching Tosh outside asking the ward sister
“Jack…thank you for last night. It means a lot more than I can express.” Ianto said taking Jack’s hand and blinking away tears.
Jack pulled him forward and kissed his head, letting Ianto hold onto him.
“I’m sorry.” Ianto said so quietly a whisper would have been louder.
“I know.” Jack replied just as quietly, “So am I.”
“You can go now!” Tosh said in delight as she burst into the room, “Although they said you shouldn’t go back to work for at least 3 days at the earliest. I’ll go and get your things.” she said in a whirlwind of excitement.
“Did you catch any of that?” Jack asked Ianto in an amused tone.
“Some.” Ianto sighed dreamily against Jacks chest.
“Do they have my coat? I’ve missed my billowy entrances without it.”
“No I do, I wouldn’t let them take it last night.” Ianto said reluctantly leaving the warmth and fished under his pillows for Jacks coat he had neatly folded.
“Thank you.” Ianto said handing it back.
“You keep it till you get home, its cold outside.” Jack smiled warmly and handed the coat back to Ianto. Tosh burst in again now with Ianto’s suit.
“The shirts a bit ‘urgh’ but you can still wear the jacket and the trousers.”
“Or not.” Jack said quickly with a cheeky grin.
“Thanks Tosh.” Ianto said taking the bag off her and sat up to reach the knot in the top of the medical gown and winced when his arm was raised too high.
“Here let me.” Jack said and duly undid the knot and let his hand run down Ianto’s back.
“I’ll wait outside” Tosh said, not sure whether to be happy or confused.
“Want me to leave?” Jack asked gently as the gown slipped off Ianto’s shoulders.
“You saw most of me a few days ago.” Ianto yawned.
“Let’s go home.” Jack said dreamily and Ianto nodded.
~…~
“You do know this goes beyond extravagance?” Ianto said giving Jack a look where he was trying to seem earnest but the glint in the corner of his eye gave him away.
“Only by your standards.” Jack said with a wide grin as he kicked Ianto’s bedroom door open.
“I can walk you’ve seen me do so.” Ianto said as they crossed the threshold.
“Are you going to moan? I don’t carry just anyone you know.” Jack said throwing Ianto a mock look of irritation.
“Just promise you won’t just drop me on the bed.” Ianto said as he hovered above said furniture in Jack’s arms.
“Would I?”
“I don’t know what you’d do regarding me and my bed.” Ianto said then smiled victoriously.
“Tease.” Jack replied as he lowered Ianto gently down onto the bed, “I’ll be right back.” Jack whispered into Ianto’s ear before he abruptly disappeared from view.

“Now he has these, three a day with food.” Tosh said as she held up the bag, “And these for pain relief, four a day or when he needs them.”
“Thanks Tosh, you’ve been…oh come here.” Jack said pulling her into a hug, “Thank you.”
“Don’t mention it, although I wouldn’t object to a small pay rise.” she grinned when they parted, “Do you want me to check the Hub tomorrow? I can probably get Owen to come in.”
“No, get yourself home or go and see your family for a few days. You’ve got as much time off as you want.”
“Thanks Jack but I don’t think I’ll need that long.” Tosh smiled gratefully, “I’ll leave you to it. I’ll just say bye to Ianto first.”
~…~
“Now Tosh has gone, I have you all to myself.”
“You say it as if she left willingly. You all but threw her out my door.” Ianto said, slightly annoyed at Jack’s conduct.
“Yes well never mind that.” Jack said and dived on the bed.
“Do you mind? You’re not at the Hub anymore and I’d appreciate having my bed being in one piece.” Ianto said and scowled at Jack.
“You love me in your bed really.” Jack smirked.
“You’re not ‘in’ my bed you’re ‘on’ my bed.”
“Now you’re just being pedantic. How are you are you comfortable enough?” Jack asked
“Yes I’m fine, just a bit tired.”
“How much sleep did you get last night?”
“A few…” Ianto said through a yawn then saw the unconvinced look on Jack’s face, “Alright I didn’t sleep.”
“Well go and have a shower, if you can, then sleep. I’ll watch over you. Unless you’d rather have a bed bath, all you need to do is ask.”
“I’d rather sleep now and shower later, I’m so tired.” Ianto said quietly and closed his eyes.
“First things first, you need to get changed. Not that I’m an expert, but sleeping in a suit cannot be that comfortable.” Jack said getting up and started to rifle through Ianto’s chest of draws, “Here put these on.” Jack said and threw an old t-shirt at him and a new pair of boxer’s.
“Close your eyes.” Ianto said firmly as he disrobed, Jack with a dramatic slap covered his eyes with his hands, “You know I’m not convinced you can’t see me.”
“Does that mean I can stop peaking and start leering?” Jack asked in hope.
“Sorry to disappoint but I’m already changed.” Ianto said, true to his word he was when Jack opened his eyes.
“In you get then.” Jack said throwing back the covers with a dramatic flourish.
Ianto gingerly climbed in and relished being in his own bed again.
“Comfortable?” Jack asked watching the blissful smile creep over Ianto’s face.
“Cold.” Ianto answered quietly, already beginning to fall to sleep.
Jack kicked off his boots, quickly disrobed, and crawled into the bed drawing Ianto closer to himself.
Ianto grunted disapprovingly at having being moved, but swiftly got comfortable in Jacks warm and tight embrace.
“Jack?” Ianto mumbled
“Yeah?” Jack whispered as not to wake Ianto.
“Don’t let go.” Ianto sighed dreamily
Jack lightly kissed the top of Ianto’s head and tightened his embrace ever so slightly.
