Chapter 2
“Um, hello, can I help you?”
The girl sitting at the table by herself, looked up at the waiter. “I’m still waiting. Sorry.”
The waiter just shook his head. “It’s okay.”
He walked back into the café, shaking his head softly to himself and mumbled, “Poor thing. She’s been waiting there for a while day already.”
Looking out at the girl again, he frowned.
She was a regular at the café where he worked. Most of them he saw her with that guy, but lately…she was coming here alone and waiting for hours. He no longer saw the happy smile on her face that was previously there. She’d been frowning more now and looking lost.
What happened to that guy? He frowned again.
“OI! Kyuhyun! What are you doing, staring off into space? Ohhhh…you’re staring at that girl again. Too bad, she’s got a boyfriend already.”
“Oh?”
“Yeah, her boyfriend’s that new singer…the one that’s starting to gain heaps of popularity now. Um…Donghae! That’s his name.”
Kyuhyun thought to himself, oh, now that makes a bit more sense. He must be too busy to meet up with her. Poor girl.
He turned around and went back to work. But the girl remained in his mind. That sad smile on her face. Kyuhyun put his hand to his heart. Why does it ache here when I think of her? I barely know her but I feel like I’ve known her forever. He couldn’t stop thinking about her.
“Kyuhyun, hey, you know you’ve just worked overtime? I’m not going to pay you for working overtime, you know.”
Kyuhyun looked up at the clock. 10 past 3. “Oh! I hadn’t noticed the time. Thanks.”
He took off his apron and went to his locker.
On his way out, he glimpsed the girl again. She was sitting at the same table, but with her head on her arms, looking forlornly into the distance.
Decisively, he walked over to her.
“Mind if I sit down?”
She looked up in surprise. “Um…no that’s ok.”
He offered her his hand, “Hi, I’m Kyuhyun.”
She stared at his outstretched hand before coming to her senses and shook it. “Hi, I’m Elizabeth, but most people call me Liz.”
Smiling to myself as I remembered how we first met. I was truly grateful that I had met such a wonderful guy.
I glanced at Kyuhyun. He was so perfect. In the 1 year that we had been married, he’d given me nothing short of blissfulness and happiness.
Kyuhyun stopped the car and rushed out, quickly opening the passenger door for me.
“You don’t always have to do that, you know.”
Smiling as he put his arm around my shoulder. “Oh, but I want to. I promised you that I’d take care of you forever and forever.” He tapped my nose before leading me into the café.
“Kyuhyun! You’ve come again? Missing us that much? Oh, hello, Liz.”
“Hello, Eeteuk.”
Kyuhyun reached out and gave Eeteuk a hug. “Yep. We miss this place so much. Brings back a lot of memories, right, love?”
I tried to keep my smile pasted on my face. “Yep.” Frowning inside, I thought to myself…this place didn’t bring back a lot of memories. But not of them were as happy as Kyuhyun thought.
Looking around, I saw that our table had been left vacant.
Kyuhyun looked to where I was staring at. Smiling towards Eeteuk. “Knew we were coming, eh?”
Eeteuk smiled warmly and led us towards our usual table. “Let’s just say, I always know what’s going on.” Winking, he walked back into the kitchen.
Smiling happily at me like a little child, Kyuhyun exclaimed, “I miss working here!”
Laughing, I tweaked his nose.
He grabbed my hand and pulled me closer to the table, and kissed me.
Trying to bat his hand away, I pulled away, embarrassed. “Honey, there’s people all around us.”
“So what? I don’t care if the whole world sees my love for you. In fact, we should show the whole world our love.”
Ring, ring.
Smiling and shaking my head at him, I looked into my bag to find my phone.
“Hello?”
Silence.
“Hello?”
I pulled the phone away from my ear and looked at it. They hung up. I checked my received calls. Private. Who could have that been?
“Who was it?”
“I dunno. No one said anything and then they hung up.”
“Maybe it was just a wrong number.”
“Hmmm…yeah.”
I shrugged as our coffees arrived.
“Here you. The usual.”
We smiled at Eeteuk and thanked him.
Sipping on my coffee, I asked Kyuhyun, “So what are going to do for the rest of the day?”
“Hmm…well since the meeting was cancelled, I have nothing else to do today. Maybe I’ll go home and get dinner prepared for my beloved wife for when she comes home?”
Reaching across the table, he held my hand. “So, what does my beloved wife want to eat tonight?”
Smiling and thinking to myself, “Hmm…surprise me.”
Grinning broadly, Kyuhyun sipped his coffee.
We continued chatting about different topics, all the while, he held onto my hand tightly in his warm ones.
“Hello?”
“Liz, it’s me.”
“Donghae, where are you? Didn’t say you’d met me here an hour ago?”
“Sorry. I had to suddenly go for a meeting with one of the directors. I won’t be able to make it. Don’t wait around for me, ok?”
“Oh ok then.”
“I have to go now. I’ve got fan-signing. Bye sweetie. I love you.”
“I love …”
Silence.
Reaching over to grab my hands, Kyuhyun said, “What’s on your mind, my dear? You seem so…thoughtful today. Hospital things?”
I looked up into his concerned eyes. “Huh?”
“You’ve been sort of staring off into space for a while now. What are you thinking? You know you can always tell me.”
Smiling at him, I shook my head. “It’s nothing. Just thinking about all those journals sitting on my desk waiting for me to read.”
“Oh…ok.”
Dropping my off back at the hospital, he held me tightly and kissed me gently. Whispering into my ears, “I love you and I’m never going to let you go.”
He embraced me again before letting me go and then driving off.
I stared as his black Mercedes drove off into the distance.
Memories suddenly flooded back to me with those words.
The raining was beating down heavily on the top of the car.
Soft bangs pelted the people inside the car.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t know it was going to rain this heavily tonight.”
“There’s no reason to be sorry, hun.” The girl cuddled closer to the guy in the car. “It gives us an excuse to be even closer, does it not?”
The guy smiled down at the girl in his arms. He closed his eyes and leant back into the backseat of the car. “Let’s hope it ends soon.”
“Hmm.”
The girl turned her head to look out the window. The rain came down in sheets, like a cascade at a waterfall. Her mind was whirling with many thoughts.
Looking up at the guy she stared at him. Looking over his every feature. The smooth black hair that still had the tinges of brown and blonde. The eyes that twinkled brightly whenever he was happy. The cheeks she was forever pinching and telling him he needed to eat a bit more. The lips that felt warm and soft on hers. She sighed softly, but not softly enough that Donghae didn’t hear her.
He opened his eyes. “What’s the matter?”
The girl smiled at him. “Nothing. I was just thinking…”
“Thinking? Of what?”
“Why you, of course.” She giggled.
He hugged her shoulders tighter. “I love you,” he whispered. “I love you and I’m never going to let you go.”
She smiled and just adjusted herself so she was more comfortable in his arms.
Why did all these memories suddenly come back to me now? I thought I had them all suppressed. Why? Why? Why? WHY?!
