Chapter 4
”What do you mean, you have to leave?”
“I told you already. My grandfather is ill and I have to accompany them.”
“Yeah. Accompany them…more like accompany that…that woman!”
“I told you before! There’s nothing between the two of us!”
“Yeah. Her being lovesick over you is totally nothing.”
“How many times do I need to repeat myself?”
“Your entire family look down on our relationship. You’re a potential rising star. Me? I’m just a simple office clerk.”
“I told you…they don’t think that. You’re studying hard, too. They can see that!”
“Oh yeah. The contempt in their eyes so show that.”
Throwing his hands in the air, the guy exclaimed, “You don’t even listen, do you?!”
“Listen to what? Your lies? Your cover-up stories? Gods…I’m so tired of all this. Everyday I work in that goddamn office whilst still studying to be a doctor. And all for what? To prove to your grandparents that I’m worthy!”
“Hello?”
“Um…hi.”
Silence. An uncomfortable silence. Kyuhyun looked at me, quizzically. I froze. What do I do? What do I say?
“I…um…why are you calling me?”
“Er…Liz…um…I…did you hear the news?”
“News? Er…yes…I…um…just saw it.”
Kyuhyun sat there, staring at me, frowning.
“Congratulations.”
“Oh…thanks. I … just wanted to invite you to the wedding.”
Surprised, I didn’t know what to say.
“Are you still there, Liz?” came the voice from the other line after several moments of silence.
“Uh…sure.”
“Good. I’ll call you later with more details.”
I quickly hung up the phone, my heart still pounding.
Kyuhyun just sat there, staring intently at me, as if waiting for me to speak.
I opened my mouth but nothing came out. I grabbed the glass of water sitting on the table and gulped it down, almost choking.
Getting out of his seat, Kyuhyun moved behind me and patted my back.
He suddenly put his arms around my neck as I stopped coughing, leaning his chin on my left shoulder. “Are you okay, baby?”
I nodded.
“Who called?”
“Donghae.”
I could feel Kyuhyun tensing up.
I gently removed his arms from around my neck and stood up.
Looking at his face, I couldn’t help but feel a pang of guilt.
The downcast look in his eyes, the one he tried to hide but failed miserably.
I walked up to him and put my arms around his waist.
“He… invited me to his wedding.”
I could feel Kyuhyun tensing up even more.
“Do you think I should go?”
An awkward silence fell between us before Kyuhyun managed to mutter out from his gritted teeth, “If you want.”
Lifting my head, I stared at him, willing all the love I felt for him to show in my eyes. “Well, it would be rude to turn him down…”
He frowned, still refusing to look at me.
“…so I suppose I should just bring my handsome husband with me to show off to everyone.”
Surprised, he looked at me. The sadness in his eyes dying and suddenly filling with surprise. Laughing out loud, he hugged me tightly.
I laughed as well. “Did you think I’d go alone?”
He laughed again, before kissing me.
Breaking away, I laughed again. “Perhaps we should eat before the food goes cold.”
Looking at our dinner, he grabbed the dishes and rushed back into the kitchen.
“Kyu!!! What are you doing?”
Shouting back, “I can’t have my wife eating cold food! Give me a few minutes.”
Smiling to myself, I sat back down.
Was this the right thing to do? My heart was still pounding. How will I react to seeing him face-to-face after all those years?
Had he forgiven me yet?
”Why are you doing this?! WHY?!!!!!!!!!!!!”
Looking at him coldly, I whispered through gritted teeth, “I told you already. It’s over. I can’t take this anymore. I no longer love you. I can’t keep lying to you and I can’t keep lying to myself.”
Spinning around, I walked away from him, tears streaming silently down my face.
“LIZ! That’s not true! IT’S NOT TRUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
Thump.
I steeled myself and straightened my shoulders. Wiping my eyes, I spun around and glared at him, crying on his knees. “It’s true. Live with it.”
