I haven't seen the film, or even read Ebert's review. So I'm just going off of the glimpses of headlines I've seen and your post. But here is my question: are people balking at the fact that she's a girl or because she is so young?
I'm all for lady super heroes, but the idea of an 11 year old, girl or boy, killing someone is a little unnerving.
I think both, actually. I mean, it's like people haven’t made such a huge stink about little girls being slightly sexy in films (see "Leon" or "Pretty Baby" for that matter) but little girls actually taking blood is seemingly repugnant. Nevertheless, I venture to wonder if the same eyebrow would have been raised had it been "Hit Boy."
Granted, I think part of the problem people have with it is that she is a very cute and likeable little girl and you get to know her that way before her "Hit Girl" persona is introduced to you. She talks about knives and guns like girls do about Hannah Montana. She's wears pigtails. She like hot cocoa. She stabs dudes through the heart with lances. :O

I'll be honest and say I'd probably have a stronger reaction to her being a girl than a boy. Not to say that I disapprove of a girl acting that way more than I would a boy, but that we are so used to not seeing girls behave that way it would be shocking.
With the gender roles and stereotypes that are still in place it's hard to shake that initial reaction. But that reaction should at least call attention to the fact that we are still so accustomed to seeing girls in, well, girly roles.
Having said that, I'd much rather see an 11 year old girl beat some bad guy ass than be sexy. It's tiring to only ever see powerful women also possess large amount of sexuality (and very little clothing).
Initially I didn't have much desire to watch this movie, but you guys talk so highly of it I may have to check it out at some point.
I agree with you. The whole film was super awesome and it does make you go, "whoa," the first time you see Hit Girl really in action. However I loved at the end how they remind you of her age and it's limitations when she is winded easily. It was just a film that surprised me in so many different ways
