Just back from seeing the film over here in France, but as it was in French, there's a fair bit of nuance that I will have missed, and I was very lost with the number of characters at times as I'm not familiar with the comic books.

Will certainly watch again when we get back to the UK.

But why oh why am I fated to really like the character that dies?!?

What were the fanfic fandom nods?

Lots of pairing stuff (particularly Natasha/Bruce which is very much a fanfic pairing and has never occurred in comic book canon), but the most obvious was Natasha's line about Steve and Tony gazing into each other's eyes.

I suspect a deal with Fox over Quicksilver(Pietro) and Scarlet Witch (Wanda) resulting in the former's death in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Wanda has always been very closely associated with the Avengers, despite debuting in X-Men as a member of the 'Brotherhood of Evil Mutants'. 'X-Men: Days of Future Past' also had Quicksilver/Peter(as they called him) and did it rather well. Wanda was sort of mentioned off-screen. Personally, I think Marvel got the better of any deal, because Wanda is one of their female powerhouses. (They intend to use her in the planned 'Dr Strange' movie.)

Thanks. I missed that comment. The French was very fast and hard to follow a lot of the time.

I liked Quicksilver.

We didn't get to see much of him. He's always been a bit of a dick in various Marvel Universes (a lot of a dick in Ultimates where he was having an incestuous relationship with Wanda) but we have to cut him a bit of slack because of his (and Wanda's) father being one of the greatest Marvel mutant villains - though this has now been retconned.

He and Wanda were two of the three ex-villains who formed the Avengers team often referred to as 'Cap's kooky quartet' (which includes the Captain himself and Hawkeye - yes, Hawkeye started out as a villain being used by the Black Widow - a villain for even longer - because he wanted to get into her panties.)

i thought there was a bit of a nod towards the Science Brothers meme as well. Screwed up the Toasterverse, but I kind of see that as AU anyway.

The Toasterverse was actually screwed up by 'The Avengers' as Sci acknowledges. 'Some Things Shouldn't be a Chore' was written before that movie premiered.

But Marvel fandom is used to open ended canon and cheerfully (or, nowadays, not so cheerfully,) works with it.

Indeed, there was a nod towards Science Bros. Also Steve telling them not to swear which isn't anywhere in any canon, movie or otherwise, and is highly unlikely, given his background. It is, however, fanon.
