I had a hard time starting this chapter. I think it's because the story's premise has been so thoroughly and unfortunately Jossed by this season. Canon!Klaus seems less appealing than he used to. But as I got into it, I really felt the difference between canon and this story, in a good way. I slipped into this world where their relationship made sense, and remembered how much I like it ( ... )

This was part of the reason it took me so long to finish writing: so much has changed and this fic seems completely implausible now. I just accepted that it's gone AU and to keep to my original idea, even if it's no longer viable. Although I wish it was, because I liked Forwood a lot at one point, but they don't make as much sense to me now. They feel so young and I don't think it will keep Caroline for too long.

I especially love the sense of inevitability to this relationship that I always feel when reading this story. The whole story is saturated with their longing for and attraction to each other -- even when they don't want to have these ( ... )

I even understood where Klaus was coming from with all the talk of murder-through-the-centuries and his burning of the restaurant, enough so that I could bridge Killer!Klaus with Caring!Klaus in my mind. He has a point about vampirism being who they are and what they do. (That's a point that TVD demonstrates well and Buffy always shied away from with its vampire characters. Though Buffy was hero/villian oriented in a way that TVD is really, really not, so of course their approach to bloodlust is different).

It was also important to me that Caroline realize that if she could care about someone who's done such terrible things, she can still love herself. Ultimately, that was the point of this chapter. And I agree with your points about "Buffy" -- they rarely tackled the finer workings of vampirism, just its implications for humans. I loved that show and Buffy and Cordelia and how well it portrayed teenagers and relationships and family and friendship and all that jazz. And Season Two Spike was HOT...but that's another story...

Wow. I can't believe that you haven't gotten more comments on this, because this is really amazing. There is so much depth to the way you write Caroline. She's struggling to come to terms with who she is, and it's reflected perfectly.

And I love your Klaus. He can be cruel, and he won't hesitate to push Caroline away if she can't put him first, but he'll still come if she needs him, and I think that's Klaus entirely. He's a monster, but he loves Caroline, and it shows. This is really perfect, and I do hope you'll write more.

First off, brilliant writing. My only criticism is really a technicality; sometimes you forget an "a" or a "the", but that is easily overlooked. This is the first Caroline/Klaus fic I have read... the first Vampire Diaries fic I have read, actually, and I don't think I want to read any other ones because I don't know how they can live up to your great writing and characterizations.

Second off, your characterizations? Phenomenal, and I do not say that lightly. Particularly Klaus; he's spot on, and I feel like he's even more in character after the last VD episode (O Come, All Ye Faithful). I'm not sure if you've seen it yet, but (no spoilers) the exchange he has with Stefan about the "secret brotherhood handshake" really just brings home the fact that Klaus just doesn't lie. Also, the scene where Caroline is feeling the guilt and the hurt over killing Anja, and Klaus is trying to make her realize how they straddle life and death, is exactly what I feel Klaus was saying when he explained Stefan why he kept the letters, and the whole " ( ... )
