Eh... I don't know... Looking at it critically, I think it was bad writing because Ianto's death was over the top. That particular show of strength by the faceless big bad was unnecessary to conveying just how big and bad the 456 were. I think we all got it at that point, and if we didn't, killing Jack and everyone else in the building the way they did would have don't just fine. Ianto didn't even really have to be there, he could have been back with Gwen and Rhys, or who knows, they could have given him something else to do. That scene was all about Jack confronting the 456, Ianto was only there to die. And that's a fail to me.
