"I figured I'd better tell you first, before I tell the boys," Shigemori said, sounding a little doubtful - the first time Shuuji had ever heard him thus - as he accepted a cup of tea from Shuuji. "Since you are her husband."
Shuuji nodded, kneeling and putting down the tray on the tatami between them. "How long will she be gone?"
"No idea, Shuuji-san. I haven't heard that anyone who has committed that particular crime can receive pardon. She may never even come home."
"Oh, I see." Earlier Shigemori had briefed him on the situation, which Shuuji found understandable. That was the most disturbing part - that it was all so relentlessly logical, including Sumiko's own action. "Well. Better guilty and free than guilty and in jail, or - " He pressed his palms against his thighs, wishing he was the type to fiddle with his glasses when nervous. "I'm sure she's going to be all right, wherever she is."
Neither of them mentioned that the longer Sumiko was on the run, the harsher the punishment would tend to be. Shigemori coughed delicately. "One more thing. There may be people coming here because they think we know where she is. They'll try to provoke us. You or Masamori mustn't get angry, ever."
"I understand, Father."
"That will be all. Thank you."
Shuuji picked up the tray and got to his feet. "She's going to be fine," he repeated, half to himself. "And so are we."
He left the room, feeling his own words weigh down on him. If Sumiko stayed near her family, none of them would stay fine; therefore she would continue to roam around. And in time, Shuuji thought, she might come to prefer it infinitely.
