Anyone been to San Diego?

We're planning on going down with our family at the end of August... taking the kids to Sea World and the Zoo.  Only going for 4 days, we're not planning on renting a car unless it's necessary.
Any recommendations on where to stay?

I have. But it was probably 7 years ago. I went with Andrew because he had to travel there on a business trip. We went to the zoo, which was great. After that we had to drive north to La Costa where he had a business thing to go to. I dont remember where we stayed - so no help there, but I want to go back someday to see the zoo again.
