I've said this elsewhere, but I'll say it again :

Keep your hair on, Flynn is just a cranky old man who's losing it in public these days. He's also emeritus, which in university speak can mean 'distinguished older academic who's still good enough that we let them hang around' but also means 'he's gone mad now and this is where we put him to do the least damage'. He's also a political scientist, which means his connection to reality is tenuous at best, and a known regular on the conservative talk circuit, appearing in lineups with Roger Kerr of the BRT and wingnuts like Ian Wishart and that dear old misogynist bastard, The Wizard.

In other words, known crazy old man says crazy things because he doesn't actually have any credibility, and media runs with it.

Personally I'm all for reversible sterilisation at birth This way (as stated) every child is a wanted child. Only difference is I wouldn't make it based on education or economic position. I'd just like to see less "Crack baby Juniors" born to women who are too stupid to use sensible prevention methods then think "hey... I can barely work my own life, I should be _perfect_ to bring another into the world."

Singapore has an interesting method to encourage education amoung young parents, which I think, goes somewhat towards the right direction to working things out.

If you have a child you get tax breaks. But _only_ if you're university educated. This isn't intended to favour the educated but rather encourage those not educated to get an education.

Only problem is, of course, that (as shown by the stats) once you _get_ an education you're less keen on having kids in general.

Not that I blame them. *shudder*. If sterilisation is good enough for me... it's good enough for everyone else. :)
