Smash episode 4

I liked this one, although it made me feel a little inadequate :)

You know, on my last birthday myself and a couple of close friends went out to a Mexican restaurant. We ate food and drank cocktails, and then we went to the cinema. I got a bunch of flowers and there may not may not have been some hijinks with a helium balloon that wasn't allowed in the cinema and had to be kept in the manager’s office until the film was over, I obviously couldn't possibly comment on that. Don't get me wrong - it was lovely, we all had a laugh and after my 3rd strawberry daiquiri I got a little misty eyed about how fantastic my friends were.

What I didn't do was have a big old party thrown for me at a swanky palatial uptown apartment. Or get serenaded by half a Broadway cast, some waiters and some random guests who just decided to join in the impromptu sing-along before having a genuine zillion dollar Degas thrust upon me. I certainly didn’t end the night being undressed by a devilishly attractive, if fairly galloping up the evilometer, dark lord director (who managed to squeeze me into his busy schedule after he’d finished touching up the ladies flirting) in front of the full length picture windows overlooking a fantastic view of the city. On reflection, that was probably a relief for the neighbours…

Also, although I try to get on with folk, we’ve all worked/spent time with people we aren’t particularly keen on. I’ve never won these people around with a well-placed flouncy strop, so that they’ll dump their bff, take me shoe shopping, overhaul my wardrobe, teach me to dance and then take over a bar for a suspiciously well choreographed song and dance routine (that may or may not have been all in my imagination).

This suggests two things; firstly that I have been missing out somewhat and secondly that I should start hanging around with theatrical types - they seem to have much more fun! :)

I really enjoyed this week’s episode; there was no filler and I only fast-forwarded the end bar song and dance routine. Ironically, I then wondered why Karen was taking centre stage if she’d expressly been told to stop hogging the limelight, so ended up having to watch it (twice no less) to work out if it was real or just a Karen daydream. I actually cared about everyone’s story this week and it’s all moving on apace. I still love Eileen (her ‘goodbye’ to the sketch was heart-breaking); Julia and Michael will all end in tears (I cheated here, and peaked ahead on this one); Ivy has now been around to Derek’s place (I take it that’s all resolved then? I did like Derek’s shouty being a star isn’t safe speech, so did Ivy apparently although she’s very insecure for someone who has fought tooth and nail to get where she is - bad Ivy, pulling a diva to get rid of the competition. I can't see how that could possibly backfire on you). I didn’t like this week’s show tune, but the party performance of it was well done. Annnd Tom’s steakhouse date is adorable - how cool would it be if a potentially awful blind date courtesy of your mother turned into a big old Broadway extravaganza at a upcoming star’s birthday bash? I hope he lasts for a few weeks at least!
