It is James' birthday and Lily wants to do something nice for him, something to show him that yes, yes, she does mean it when she says she loves him even when she spits it at him angrily. She takes care to ask Dumbledore ahead of time to let Remus please have the night off, to ask Sirius not to land in a pit of flames, and to send an owl to Caradoc, Kingsley, Frank and the Prewett twins. She carefully combs her hair and ties it back in a colorful scarf, a present from his parents, knowing how much he likes when she acts like she's been in his life for much longer than the scant two years she's come to love his indescribable awkwardness and mischevious heart. The cake is served and the wine finished before she realizes she forgot to call Peter Pettigrew and nobody reminded her.
