I've started to feel like the times when I'm happiest are the times when I'm regarding myself with the least amount of realism. Like, I'd have to be delusional to be optimistic about my future.

Which is the diseased way of thinking: unrealistic optimism, or pragmatic pessimism?

I personally feel that optimism is overrated, but I blame the Self Help industry for that ( ... )

Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night and it's just me, without any noise or distractions, and that's when it's worst. But the thing that I am trying to remind myself is that without any outside stimuli, that also deprives my thoughts of context, too, which is why it's easy to lose perspective and things seem worse than they are.

And you make a good point -- it's easy to forget about the things that we do have when we're focused on the things we don't.
