So, male or female, if you sleep around without your spouse's knowledge, you're having an affair. If it's short-term, it could possibly be called a fling. Men who have a long term lover have a mistress; do women just have a lover, or is there some appropriate terminology that I'm missing ( Read more... )

If I were to have sex with someone who is not SweetiePie, it would be an affair/fling/cheating, even though we can't get married in this state, because we are in a committed relationship. I wouldn't call it adultry, though, because there are only (to my knowledge) two basic forms of adultry - civil and religious - and we meet the prereqs for neither.

I think the 'technical' term for a male equivilant of the mistress is 'kept man'. 'Gigolo' is more correct though the modern usage is, I think, almost always reserved for a heterosexual male prostitute. Also: gardener, poolboy, etc :)
