Reading List Recommendations

The Bit has reached the age where she wants chapter books. We've gone through The Hobbit, The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, all three Dragonbreath books, and several Ramona books. She's working through Howl's Moving Castle right now. I need recommendations. What should I get to read to my daughter?

I just gave my 7 yo godson The Keys To The Kingdom series by Garth Nix... Mister Monday, Grim Tuesday, Drowned Wednesday, et al, and he loved them, as did his mom. :)

Also, I was a huge fan of everything E.B. White when I was around her age.

Love Garth Nix. I've read his Abhorsen series about ten times.

The Chronicles of Prydain?

The first few books should be okay.

The John Bellairs books, particularly:

The Treasure of Alpheus Winterborn
The Dark Secret of Weatherend
The House with a Clock in its Walls

Has she heard/read the Series of Unfortunate Events? Any Nancy Drew mysteries?

I realize these all have a theme, but ... this is what I loved as a kid. :)

Oh, and Nick of Time, by Ted Bell. It might be beyond her, but it's a good one.

When you say she's ready for chapter books, I assume you mean you're reading them TO her, right? She's not actually READING them herself is she? Because if she is, I'm really impressed!

To your question:

The Oz books
Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson's books about Peter Pan, such as "Peter and the Starcatchers" (really good reading)
The Little House books (Faith loves them)
The Spiderwick Chronicles (read it yourself first, might be too scary)

If I think of more, I'll reply again.

Oh, and if you leave out the, er, adult parts, you could read her "War for the Oaks".

Seth seems so ready for chapter books, but lately he's been scared by the strangest things - we had to stop reading Dr. Doolittle because the King of the Jolliginki throws him in prison and threatens to make him scrub his kitchen... (Also, he LOVES Night on Bald Mountain, in Fantasia, but refuses to watch the Sorcerer's Apprentice part.) We tried Bunnicula just now but he didn't want to read it either. So we've been re-reading our complete Winnie-the-Pooh book.
