(ooc Discussion)

On a completely out of character note, I'm always curious to explore various topics. I was thinking of putting up a few posts to see if people would be interested in sharing in these discussions/and our put in their two cents. I will merely present a topic and from there, we discuss. There is no right or wrong answers. Just as a someone still  ( Read more... )

Playing with stories for other people, mainly, and getting caught out by others doing the same for me.

Oh, and Kaukai's shiny gnome hat.

It is a scary hat.

Well said, Benny. I love with it becomes a give and take of stories. It's the best kind.

I play for story, with the understanding that different people want different things out of stories ( ... )

I would have to say that me as well, the story is king. Characters and personality development and interpersonal relationships are interesting to me, but it really needs to be tied back to a story. In terms of what I read and watch, lame characters can survive in the backdrop of a good story, but the opposite is not true for me. A lame story kills the characters, no matter how good they are. For example, take Heroes. I loved the first season, but started to lose interest in the second. I hardly have watched the third. I don't think the characters have changed for the worse... it's just that I don't find the stories compelling ( ... )

See, I have the other problem. I /love/ to tell stories. I love to see people get really involved and so excited that I have to nudge them and remind them that I only type so fast, and my mind has to piece everything together that has been found out. It's /amazing/ to watch this in players ( ... )

This is a wonderful, and wonderfully complex, question.

Like all of us, I play for many different reasons. One of them is the pleasure of characterization. Maybe I'm a frustrated actor; I just enjoy the process of creating a character, imbuing it with motivations and goals and a history, and developing it through actual play experience -- making that character, in short, into as much of a real person as my talents allow.

The tricky bit is that this is also, in a certain sense, playing for story. Does the characterization flow from the story, or does the story flow from the character? As far as I can tell, the answer -- for me at least -- is 'yes'.

There is something I keep running into, not once but repeatedly - and in the interest of fairness, not just here but on every MUSH I've ever been on. Sometimes it has split a MUSH. It's almost like a wobbly dividing line down the middle of the MUSH, and it affects ( ... )

I can't answer the questions you raise, but I'd like to make a mention of something related. It might be merely an incorrect perception, but it's nagging at me.

(From here on "you" does NOT mean you, Baksi! Or anyone. And I'm sorry, it got kind of stream-of consciousness and long. Which is why I don't often answer on these threads. I talk WAY too muchI have the "welcome thoroughly negotiated trouble" setting ( ... )

I'm not entirely sure I understand Storybuilding, because why spend focus to do something (which to my mind is STILL OOC comminication) that you can do for free with some OOC chit-chat. But then I haven't really been pulled into anything highly charged or political, so I can't really speak. In the case of Storybuilding specifically, staff is involved, and receives notification at every step along the way. That is the big difference between 'Storybuilding' and 'just talking it out like adults ( ... )

I'm all for people telling stories and avidly encourage them. I love the one going with Baksi right now, in fact. Currently, the packets seem to be what drives a small sub-set of the player base and that's cool as well. I guess it is finding that balance ( ... )
