“You’re a bitch.”

I didn’t usually call girls such harsh names. Despite being the evil spawn of a Death Eater and having a “reputation” at Hogwarts, as mother so eloquently put it, respect was one of the few things I truly believed in. And respect towards Lily Luna Potter was one thing I was always very stringent on. That girl demanded respect in every move she made, in every smirk and step and sideways glance. She wasn’t as untouchable as people made her out to be, but she wasn’t to be dragged down to their level, either.

“I’m sure you have a reason for using that word, Malfoy.”

She went defensive without missing a beat. How anyone could ever doubt that this fiery redhead belonged in Slytherin House was beyond me. Her eyes went from ice to sapphire; her hand snapped to her wand, which she always wore tangled in her scarlet tresses; her shoulders were thrown back and her chin set in defiance. She was smart, and she knew that if I was angry enough to throw that word in her face, then she probably deserved it.

“You told Rose.”

I wanted it to sound accusatory. I wanted her to know that I was angry. But the words came out cold and lifeless, because getting mad at Lily was simply something I didn’t know how to do. I had seen others do it. James would rail at her at least three times a week, yelling at her for dying her hair, or messing up on the pitch, or doing well on the pitch when he wanted her to do poorly, or teasing his girlfriend. Albus became understandably livid whenever Lily picked a fight with one of the professors, especially Professor Longbottom, whom he was particularly fond of. Rose and Lily fought at least once a day, with Rose calling her a whore and Lily volleying back with “prude.”

And don’t get me started on her epic battles with Griselda Parkinson.

“Someone had to. And it wasn’t as if you were going to grow a pair any time soon.”

She was right, of course. Being a Slytherin meant gauging risks, trying to figure out the smart thing to do-instead of the right thing or the brave thing. The problem was, falling for Rosie wasn’t smart, but it was definitely right and brave. So I needed a push in the right direction and I was very grateful to Lily, but I wasn’t about to tell her that.

“That’s not what you were saying last night.”

I should have expected the curse that followed, should have had my wand in my hand before saying those words. But I was livid and I wasn’t thinking, so they escaped before I could protect myself, and by the time I realized Lily was going for her wand, the curse was already rolling off her tongue. I felt my nose crack, knowing that she’d broken the bones in at least three places. Her face stayed impassive, but I could see the slight brewing of stormy hurt in her eyes.

“I don’t think Rosie wants to know that.”

If there was one thing Lily was very good at, it was hitting where it hurt. She knew a lot of people and she knew these people very well. If anyone in the school crossed her, she could ruin his or her life. Being best friends with someone like Lily was difficult, to say the least, being in a sexual relationship with her while wanting a romantic relationship with her cousin was all but impossible. Thankfully, I was a Malfoy, and we had a knack for playing both sides and coming out on top.

“I would have told her, eventually.”

That was true. I was planning on telling her after we graduated, when our parents wouldn’t be able to control our lives anymore. Or, at least, not to the extent that they could keep us from seeing on another.

“Yeah, after you had your fill of me.”

Of course, there wasn’t any pain in her words. While the rest of their family was painfully expressive, Lily, Dominique, and Molly were all stone cold when it came to emotions. Lily could completely break down on the inside and there wouldn’t be any physical proof, at all. Her voice remained even, her eyes remained cold, her body remained mocking; yet there was something that made me want to pull her close and hug her and tell her I would always love her. But this wasn’t going to work.

“That’s uncalled for.”

It was, entirely, but by saying that I went from being the one wronged to the one doing wrong. Lily looked at me with disdain in her sapphire eyes, shook her head, and twisted her wand back in to her bun.

“Go get your nose fixed, Malfoy. Then go tell my cousin you’re in love with her. And then? Then you can go fuck yourself, because I’m done doing it for you.”

She turned on the heel of her dragon-hide boots and walked away, her arse swishing tantalizingly, purposefully, like she wanted me to continue lusting after her. Lily always was a tease, still is actually. She’s married, four kids, perfectly devoted to her family. But every once in a while, she’ll dance with me at a family event and push her bum up against me; or she’ll walk pass me and let her robes fall open to reveal her breasts; or she’ll smile at me from across the room with want in her eyes and I’ll feel a pull in my groin that not even Rosie can get out of me.

So that was the end of our relationship, insomuch as there was an end. Personally, I don’t think we’ll ever be finished.
