The Sick Diet

During my recent convalescence (in which I ate exactly nothing for an entire week), I apparently managed to drop 10 lbs...which certainly isn't  healthy, nor was it intended, but now that I've discovered this startling link between not eating and losing weight, you can probably expect to see my name on the cover of the next issue of Science.

Actually, the rabies vaccine shortage is currently only affecting the protocols for pre-exposure immunization, not post-exposure. So, basically (cross your fingers), as of yet, if you're bitten by a rabid (or potentially rabid animal), you should have no trouble getting post-exposure immunizations. It's just the folks who work in high-risk jobs (like vet students, animal control officers, etc) who haven't already been given the pre-exposure immunizations that are being told to be extra cautious because there isn't enough vaccine to give as pre-exposure at the moment. That just means that all the people in high-risk jobs will be in the same boat as anyone else who gets bitten - looking at 5 post-exposure immunizations, without the prior 3 pre-exposure immunizations (YES, those of us who've had the rabies immunizations already ALSO have to have the same post-exposure treatment as the rest of you).

Oberontfk did a pretty good job of explaining the situation, but if you're interested in learning more about what's going on with the rabies vaccine supply, you can check out the CDC Rabies webpage: http://www.cdc.gov/rabies/news/2008-06-17_RabVaxupdate.html
