and an Archive of our Own has tons of wonderful stories. Here's what I don't get...human au's. I've also seen it in the Supernatural fandom as well as the Merlin fandom. AU's can certainly that go down a different track from the canon to suit the writer's ideas of how the show should go and can be unique and quite interesting but I'm never a fan of ( Read more... )

My best guess as to why fic writers would take the supernatural element out of a story and do a human AU is because they just don't want to deal with it! Accounting for all that mythology/powers/canon stuff is haaaaaard, and sometimes you just want to cut to the interpersonal chase, you know? And some tropes just call for ditching it-coffee shop AUs, sport team or rock band AUs, etc.

I say this not defensively-I don't mind human AUs, but I don't feel strongly enough about them to get all up in arms about them-I speak from experience as a lazy writer! I can't keep my hands off SPN canon (actually, a civilians AU is on my list of things to challenge myself to write this year because I never do), but half the reason I've only bothered to write one Teen Wolf fic and am super intimidated to write any Merlin fic is because the supernatural canon stuff in both fandoms scares me! :)

I guess I'm more bothered than most folks... lillian78 February 26 2013, 22:01:09 UTC
One of the main reasons I watch SPN, Merlin and Teen Wolf is to take me into that fantastical world where magic works and interacts with our own mundane world. It used to bug me years ago in the Harry Potter fandom too (though there weren't as many as far as I could see). Maybe that's why I love urban fantasy as well. I feel if you want to do "norm" slash pairings there's tons of shows/movies/books you can draw from..
