100 Recipes - #5 Brussels Sprouts with Bacon and Garlic

Jan 04, 2009 21:57

Apparently audioboy doesn't eat Brussels sprouts, due to trauma inflicted by a vegetable boiler in his childhood. So as B. was stirring the sprouts for me, she described them to N. as "greens". He ate them cheerfully, and we talked about the possibility that the Balsamic vinegar is unnecessary in this dish and leaving it out might allow the bacon flavor to come through more fully. Then, just as he was leaving, I said "Thanks for helping out with the Brussels sprouts experiment!" and his jaw dropped. Just goes to show that cooking just about anything with bacon and garlic makes it tasty.

#5 Brussels Sprouts with Bacon and Garlic This was a simple and tasty recipe from How to Cook Everything. Basically just fry up some bacon (I added a little olive oil, since I was using less bacon than the recipe called for and that seemed to work well from a functional perspective, but more bacon would have been good). I threw in some garlic, because it seemed obvious, skipped the thyme and chose Balsamic over lemon because B. isn't big on lemon with veggies. Next time I think I would go with the thyme and lemon, to see what that's like.
