This is bad. Over the weekend I felt what I thought was a tiny chip on one of my teeth. I went to the dentist yesterday and it turned out to be a crack running through my tooth under an old filling. So he pulled out the old filling, filed it down, filled it, and told me to come back in a month for a crown. I went back to work looking like two face ( Read more... )

I've used over the counter ones which I took in today and the dentist said could actually have caused the crack or at least made it worse. He threw them away. I'm going to talk to him about it when I go back. Even if insurance doesn't cover it (mine will at 50%, I think), I'll fucking pay. This is miserable.

Your dentist might be trying to $$$ you. My awesome dentist told me straight out that there is a certain kind of mouthguard at target for $20 which is almost as good as the $1000 one they make you buy for this shit. I have it, I will look up the name if you want it.

I hope he's not trying to swindle me! The OTC ones were pretty ouchy, so I'm inclined to believe him that they weren't doing much good. What kind do you have? Maybe it is a brand I haven't tried and it would not be total garbage.

If you grind your teeth it's called "Bruxism".
(From Answers.com)
Definition

Bruxism is the habit of clenching and grinding the teeth. It most often occurs at night during sleep, but it may also occur during the day. It is an unconscious behavior, perhaps performed to release anxiety, aggression, or anger.

Description

Bruxism is one of the oldest disorders known, and approximately one in four adults experiences it. Most people are not aware of it before their teeth have been damaged.

My Husband has had it for about 10years, if you want to screw your teeth up more go for the cheap $20 job. Otherwise, as always, you get what you pay for. Get a proper mouthguard made to fit, I hope your tooth gets better. Cheers.
