best effort

Stepped over to the Metropolitan Market. I'd go a block further to Safeway, save myself some money, but I can't be bothered. Planned on putting a lemon cheesecake together. Meyers lemons, heavy cream, cheese cake, and cookies to crush for the crust. But then I thought about it. Stirring the cream cheese into the cream. I don't have a mixer. ( Read more... )

Nice icon. It's nice to see that you are becoming an icon whore like me.

Mmmm cherry pie. That's not so bad. Not as exciting as lemon cheesecake, but it'll do.

I am very happy with my new large capacity toaster oven. It is big enough so that I can make frozen pizzas and also bake pies and stuff like that. My favorite new things are those little Nancy's mini-quiche things, and mini apple tartlets [they were on clearance, so I bought some boxes]. You just take them out of the freezer and stick them in for eight minutes and they make the house smell sooo good.

It's not as fun as cooking, but it is less labor intensive of those days when you are not so motivated and still want something good. Probably not good for you, but good tasting, in any case.

P.S. As for the baking smell-- you can buy candles for that. They have some nummy ones these days. Of course then you still have nothing to eat.

I could get candles, but I am not a candlish person. It isn't quite the same. You don't get the authentic parts, like when the juices spill out (nonsexually) and burn after landing on the cookie sheet, or even the smell of the bits in the oven that needs cleaning.

I was willing to make the cheesecake, just not willing to smash the cream cheese manually.

Oh, mixers...

Not a candlish person? How am I even your friend? You don't like potatoes, either. . .

It's a good thing you have so many other good qualities.

Not theoretically opposed to candles, just not something I think about buying on a regular basis.

But potatoes, potatoes just take up so much space.

There is always scratch fruit pie. You can do that without a mixer pretty easily, and cutting cubes of butter into the flour by hand is actually quite run, and stress-relieving. I'm sure cardamom would definitely go well with apples or berries :)

quite FUN*
When I leave a first comment with this LJ layout, for some reason the box is size one font and I can't distinguish between some characters. So I type things like "quite run".

Cardamom would go well with peaches or apricots.

mmmm cheesecake.

I was on a kick of making brownies for awhile. Of course mine come with all the dry ingredients mixed together and put in a bag by my mother-in-law...I just add eggs and water. Almost like the store bought box..but so much better.

I also went on a kick of making strawberry/apple or any fruit I could find in the house crisps. So easy to make and no real mixing needed. Just blending pretty much.

Lately anything with sugar I could devour. I just know my test for gestational diabetes is going to come back and say I now have to watch everything I eat or my child will be a 14pound bundle of fat when it comes out.

You know you don't want to push out a 14 pound baby.

I had a cherry pie, one of those frozen ones you bake in the oven for an hour. Not so good.

I'm hoping more for 6lbs!

All this talk of baking is making me think I'm going to have to make something today. But all I have in my freezer are saskatoons and I'm not a huge fan of them. But then if adding strawberries to anything always makes it better. :)

I hadn't heard of a saskatoon until I just googled it. What does it taste like?
