I thought it was really good -- the visuals are amazing, and yes, Cameron showed some real imagination in designing the look of that world. But it will be a shame if it wins best picture -- the dialog was often flat, and every plot point was telegraphed at least half an hour in advance. Also, the aliens did not feel nearly alien enough -- too obviously modeled on various cultures on Earth that western Europeans colonized and conquered. I don't think the film is racist -- I kind of agree with the reading that sees Sully as a truly transformed figure, along the lines of abolitionist John Brown -- but it's not exactly subtle.
Plus, Cameron's ex's movie, The Hurt Locker, may also be up for best picture, and Kathryn Bigelow is seriously due some karmic justice...
