I started this set about a month ago, abandoned it halfway through, and came back to work on it after I went to Osaka and saw Brokeback Mountain last Sunday.
I wasn't sure if it was a good idea to go on. There was no plot. It wasn't even a character sketch. I merely wanted to draw the scenes and somehow put the scattered pieces together into 10 pages. I was stuck and so I put the pages aside.
And then I took off during Spring break and visited Kyoto and Osaka. Being in a hotel room and not being able to work on the comic made me realize how much I wanted to finish it. While wandering about temples and souvenir shops, fanart was all I thought about. I even painted a H/D themed ceramic dish in one of the souvenir shops I visited. That's how badly I am addicted.
On the last day of my trip I went to a small theatre in Osaka to see Brokeback. Apparently the film is shown only in small theatres in major cities of Japan, so I didn't get to see it until now. It was a touching movie; great storyline, beautiful pictures, good cast, and it's gay (yay). Awesome story gets to go to the big screen, and my work, though amateurish and imperfect, still deserves to see the light. So I took mental pictures of some scenes in the movie and inserted them in the comic when I got back.
Here's the page-by-page commentary:
1. I got images of the objects from fotosearch.com. It's a very convenient way to find reference material.
2. I couldn't decide what to draw for background. I picked clouds because it's the easiest.
3. Harry's jaw is too big. I realized this after I inked everything. Shoot.
4. Again the faucet and showerhead were from fotosearch. Loved them.
5-6. The shadow of the flashback scenes is done with a different hatching pattern. I also did the shadow of their faces a bit differently.
7. The hell of endless hatching. Hell I say.
8. Everybody's in shadow because I was lazy.
9. This is the black+white version of the watercolor in my last post. I've always wanted to see how the watercolor would turn out if it was in ink.
Have been sick for three days straight, but am feeling better now. Walked too much while I was in Kyoto and Osaka. I decided to save on transportation and thus walked everywhere I wanted to see, which was later proven to be a stupid idea. Got back with my thighs numb and my back sore. Throat started to hurt the day after, and then fever and sinus came in. I might have caught a cold.
Been away from LJ for a while and will start catching up very soon. Before I go away and check my flist, may I present two pictures for your viewing pleasure -
Osaka Castle.
Peach flower.
