Exploring the original fic universe has led me to one conclusion: I'll try anything as long as it's well written. My current obsession is freece's Captive Prince. Such subtle hints of back story, political machinations and wonderful characters. This is no M/m Mills and Boon harem fic. No no no. This is so much more. Book one is complete.

ps, one of the characters, Laurent, would give Toreth a run for his money.

I think that applies to the majority of us. My question is more like what will make people read a story when they have yet known how well the story is written. What type of story will most probably get readers' attention.

Thanks for the rec, btw!! :-)

What gets my attention is that the journey until our lads can be together will not be easy. I love an element of danger and darkness. There needs to be some form of darkness,

I suppose sci-fi,futuristic and historical are my top faves, along with slave fic: you know, the feistsy, damaged, won't roll over slave and the honourable but damaged master. *scratches head* That sound a tad like fluff doesn't it.

Speaking of darkness, you must read The Eternal Dungeon series by the gloriously gifted duskpeterson. Beautifully written, complex and darkness in spades; it's right up your alley.

In a cool, dark cavern, guarded by men and by oaths, lies a dungeon in which prisoners fearfully await the inevitable. The inevitable will be replaced by the unexpected.

The Eternal Dungeon, a historical fantasy series set in a land where the psychologists wield whips.http://duskpeterson.com/eternaldungeon/index.htm... )

I've been doing some reorganization of my fanfic bookmarks so this is a good time for this. Usually it's after I've read something that I find out the author is fandomfamous so it's not a causal relationship. Ratings are always difficult because an extremely good piece of writing can only warrant a G rating, and that is different from writing for a G audience and so not writing believable stories. Obviously in general I'm looking for the smut and it's hard to believe a complete absence of swearing or mentions of sex that would generally get it a PG or higher rating, but a poignant character piece has its merits as well. Bookmarking this to look at later.

haha, so true. I guess there's a reason why some people are fandom famous. :-)

Yes rating. How a story is rated is up to the author. I am more curious about what ratings will attract people to read - i.e. if a story is rated R, would it attract more people to read if it's otherwise a G story?

Glad that the poll interest you :-) And thanks for taking it and commenting!

It helps that I'm not really involved in any fandoms so when I go looking for fic it's usually totally independent of what anybody else might think. In smaller fandoms there are usually people who become famous for being prolific and just being around a lot and friending people etc because it's easy to tell who the good writers are and aren't, but there's also more a sense of camaraderie rather than hierarchy ( ... )

Yes I agree. My first fandom was a small one, and we weren't picky at all.

If I'm posting something on LJ I usually provide descriptive tags rather than a rating
That's what I have been trying to do. The reason is that I always have problem rating my own work.

I find this poll quite informative, and I hope it's helpful to you too! :-)

Filling out this pole reminded me how unexciting my tastes are. My favourite manga are stuff like Antique or 風の行方. XD

Oh no no there's no such thing as unexciting. Antique is a very good read - btw, the same artist is now writing 大奥, which has won many awards. It's not slash but I highly recommend!

I have that one, but lent it out to a friend before I got around to reading it. XD;
She'll get it back to me one of these days and I'll give it a go!!

I think aside from 大奥 I've read everything she's ever done. I love her so! <3 <3 <3

Yeah I've also read almost everything she's done (except Flower of Life and きのう何食べた?). I like her work too <3
