Shouqi and Shamal: my first cats, inherited from a roommate in Bahrain. They sort of went with the apartment. Then my 1st ex took them because his gf thought they were pretty.
Heineken/Misha: Orphaned farm kitten, not weaned when rescued.
Bonington: Local pet store owner took in a pregnant stray, Bonington was one of the kittens
Falda: Born in the local shelter to a stray that had been rounded up pregnant
Yawgmoth: Left at the Vets.
And one dog: Star, puppy mill Border Collie with malignant hypertension and sheep phobia. Also from a shelter.
Oh she was a nice enough dog, just a bit nutso. Well, more than a bit, but mostly in a good way.
Heineken/Misha was a tough little beast. I ended up taking her back to the farm when I left Bahrain. "Heineken" was her official name -- it was on the box she came in, but Misha was what she answered to. She was the only one of that litter to survive after their mom disappeared.
If I ever get a breed puppy, it will be a working dog and probably a cur...which is an unofficial American working breed that has been around forever (think Old Yeller). They are not pretty and they are not fashionable, but they are smart. That said I've never bought an animal in my life. I get them from the pound or the Humane Society or they find me.
stories like this make me cry. i never knew how the rescue workers did it, extra kudos to them. trying to convince your average intelligent person that puppy mills a.) exist and b.) are bad is often nearly impossible, it's horrifying.
i recently told a friend of mine who i thought was joking about buying a dog off a website (that sold basically any dog mix you wanted, hit the paypal button and it gets shipped to you, and forget any guarantees or contacting them ever again, unless you want a 'replacement' in extreme cases) - his response was "really? you think it's not on the up and up?"
It's enough to make me scream and spork their eyes out so they can't read the 'net adverts. The ONLY thing that makes this situation easier to toleate is that the pup is getting the care it needs and should the inevitable happen, it's exit out of this world is as peaceful as it can be.
Also? thanks for adopting Mr. Petey. He's a lucky boy. Scritch the both of them for me.
