I suppose I see most people in any extreme as close-minded. Someone who is a part of some kind of organized religion (or, well, extremely set in the ways of that religion) typically won't want to see any other religion as being correct (which leads to wars and shit). Not saying this is true of everyone, again, but the extremists. Atheists are on the complete opposite side of the spectrum. They refuse to believe in God, period. But atheists know JUST AS LITTLE as religious people. Nobody knows FOR SURE whether or not there is a God. I am open to everybody's beliefs, but I think they people with their own beliefs should also be open to other beliefs. And if you're an atheist open to the belief that there could be a God, then .. you're agnostic. lol
Atheism is simply the lack of belief in a god. However, I think you're describing what would be referred to as strong-atheism, which is the view that there is no possibility of a god/deity existing. However, many atheists don't believe in god while also acknowledging that it is still possible for a god to exist (known as weak atheism, or sometimes termed as "agnostic atheism"). This possibility arises out of the fact that knowledge may not currently exist that something doesn't exist. Agnosticism is more along the lines of not knowing, or lacking knowledge, to either believe or disbelieve in a god

Haha, I'm the same way with spiders. Sometimes I'll let them live in the corner of my room for a few months before I put them outside.
Also, atheism is not synonymous with have a closed mind. One can easily be an open minded atheist.
