This isn't the first time I've wrestled this demon. He and I are old friends, I suppose. He's as much of a friend as I have left these days anyhow, and he likes it that way. We always tease, he and I, and he always casts his love for me into the ring. We go back and forth with our japes and jibes like an intimate foreplay.

Well everybody here has kind of already said what I would have. Your choice of words was impressive.

I admit I felt like some of this was a reference to a battle with alcoholism. I thought your comment that the demon was never more than "twelve steps behind" seemed like a potentially intentional reference to a 12 step program.

It was written with alcoholism in mind, yes. The 12 steps line is exactly that. I intentionally left it broader to invite other interpretations though.  :) thanks so much for reading!
