I also have a 66, it's from 1913 and it has the Red Eye pattern of decals. It's my heavy duty sewing machine. I use my Singer 15 from the 30's for more fine sewing. I still need to get my Bradbury handcrank up and running. It's a 12 class VS type. The handcrank attaches to the base and not the machine. When you lift the machine up to oil the works in the base, the crank automatically disengages and folds to the side *yay* I need to switch the base with another Bradbury that I have to make one machine that has a good head and case. It's from the late 1800's and runs smooth as glass.

I just picked up a Singer 29-4 to do leather work on. It's a treadle and has the feed dogs on top (imagine walking foot with no lower feed) This makes sewing in circles withouth rotating the garment possible.

You are in luck since it already has the handwheel on it. It must have been in a treadle before being placed in the case. Handcranks are pretty easy to come by and are easy to add on since you don't have to muck with the wheel.

O yeah I remember now that you use an antique sewing machine. ;) I didn't know you had more than one though. Your red eye pattern 66 sounds really nice. When you say you sew heavy duty stuff on it I would think that would include leather. Does your 66 not handle leather sewing very well? I was hoping to sew all kinds of heavy duty stuff on mine including leather, (my leather corset one day,) and maybe if I like this machine enough to put away my electric Kenmore and only use it for EVERYTHING. :) Do you think it will be ok to sew leather on the one that I have or is that something that must be determined just by the way it sews ( ... )

Treadleon is great, needlebar is also a good resource. The 66 will be good for doing pretty much everything except heavy leather. Garment leather 1-1.5 oz should be ok. Anything heavier needs thicker needles than will fit in the 66. The 29 is a really good machine for sewing thick leather. I picked mine up (w/ the cast iron treadle) for $350. I picked it up locally so there was no shipping. It would have cost approx $200 to ship it.

All of my other machines were Ebay purchases. I will never ever buy a treadle though them again as pretty much everyone out there cannot ship a cast iron treadle without damaging it. Machines are iffy but if you point the seller to treadleon and needlebar for packing directions they should arrive ok.

I'll take some pics and put them up soon.

So far I really like Treadleon. I have took a look at needle bar and that is also a great place. I am going to pick up that book on the Treadleon site for $13.00 in hopes it will help me out if I happen to see another singer or antique machine in a thrift store and need to identify it on the spot. Do you have any books or know of any books about antique machines? I really would like to read up on them. What got you started in collecting ( ... )
