I don't think I need to mention there are spoilers.
OK people. It's upsetting that LF got The Hounds line. I was upset and sad. It seemingly takes away from the Hound's part of the story. Or does it?
Gregor needed an introduction- and The Hound needed some background as well. It's been 4 episodes (and technically, several months since the beginning of Game of Thrones.) So instead of waiting another episode or two, the writers decide to have Littlefinger tell the Hound's tale. It establishes a few things: Littlefinger is an enigma- how does he know all this stuff? Gregor is crazed. Not that this ever needed to be said. I mean, damn, his actions alone show us how much a monster he is, and it gets worse as the series goes on. That said, something needed to be said NOW. And then the Hound, who outside of killing Mycah and a little bit of sarcasm to Ned when it happened, has done nothing but stand around looking dour and growling.
So here's Sansa, after witnessing Ser Hugh get killed in a joust. Here's creepy Pedo Baelish, giving her a bit of history, for her benefit and the benefit of the viewers. She looks at the Hound. LF mentions that The Hound would kill her if he heard the tale. That NO ONE would be able to stop him- he's that strong, that crazy. He's not only a burn victim, he's a crazy strong, no sympathy, murdering burn victim. She should probably go to the Sept now and pray for a little mercy, that he never finds out she knows.
So here is my speculation: HBO has already said Sansa and the Hound will have their scenes together. So here's what happens: We get the Hound stepping in to save Loras. Sansa sees this as part gallantry, but perhaps can't help but wonder if his relationship with Gregor also prompted him to step in. She knows he knows what kind of monster Gregor is. She sees his strength. She becomes terrified of him.
We get her displaying her "courtesies" with him later, as he takes her back to her chambers. But despite her fear she's going to pry...(I can't remember the whole quote, but she'll ask about the "accident" with Ser Hugh and Ser Gregor. We get him terrifying her even more with the whole "You think Gregor didn't know what he's doing?" and "I'm not a Ser" spiel. She nearly pisses herself.
Head to Season 2. Knowing what she knows, going through everything she goes through...the person showing her hidden kindness and even some protection, is the Hound. She starts to see. OH LOOK PEOPLE, WE HAVE SANSA AND SANDOR AGAIN.
So yes. LF giving the speech was sort of disappointed. But it can still work. So far, HBO has not let me down in the series. I'm going to choose to trust them. I don't think GRRM would let them take out an important relationship, unless he thought that the series wasn't going to continue for a few more seasons. HBO did it this way for the reasons I stated above- timing and providing history. This was a very exposition filled episode. Making room for plenty of action later.
So chill. Have faith. And if anything, hope that instead of a little caressing of the face, we get a full blown Sandor/Sansa kiss. <3
