Food for Thought

So tonight I've been contemplating what I want to do after getting my Psych degree from NMU. At first I thought I was going to get a master's in guidance counseling but that idea left a bad taste in mouth. Then I thought about getting a teaching degree in English but yet again I stumble upon the problem of having to go through another 5 years of ( Read more... )

susan, if my dad is any sort of example, let me tell you what a master's in english from NMU will get you: a job selling windows, doors and vinyl siding in marquette, mi.

all kidding aside, i think it's a good idea. only thing is that if you're gonna do it, you've gotta go all out to get anywhere. no middle ground here......

do you, susan page, take this master's of english to be your partner, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish; from this day forward until death do you part?

the taking a year off thing is tricky tho, you've gotta be brutally honest with yourself on these questions: what would this year off afford you? would you actually go back to school after a year away? have i become your mother?

i love how we've both been deciding on routes for our futures lately. :)

i concur with my brother...really think about whether or not you'd actually go back if you took a year off. that aside, though, i think you could do it. keep in mind that there's not much you can do with a b.a. in psych, though. which is why i decided to take it further, myself. much further.

All I know about this topic is that you need to decided what you want to do, and then do it. You can't let other people's ideas about the world get in your way. I want to teach college level Poli Sci, my grades suck, I don't know if I can get into grad school. I'm gonna try anyway, yeah I'm gonna have to work my ass of, but hey, thats life.

If you are gonna make it in the world, you have to want it.

well said Chris, well said. It isn't just about deciding your future but making it everything you strive for. Not only do you have to want it you need to be willing to do whatever it takes to get there. I know that I won't get accepted right away to UT because I'm out of state and a lot of other factors but I know they offer night classes that are open to the public. I can audit classes. There are a tons of different avenues. You just have to be willing to do the work. Don't stop out thinking. Do.
