The Whole Pledge Nonsense

Well, I suppose it is about time I comment on the topic that the entire nation is outraged over right now. I basically think it is a trivial matter that both sides are freaking out over. I am an agnostic atheist and I have no qualms with uttering the meaningless words "under God" in the pledge of allegiance. To me those words have even less meaning ( Read more... )

I guess I'm not the only one who isn't "up in arms" about this issue. I really don't care either way. Sure, put the meaningless phrase in pledge, it's not like I really give a shit.

This is the title of an article I read years ago about the meanlessness of the rote recitation of the plege in schools. The kids don't even recognize the words there saying. It's all just a string of syllables they have to repeat. It's hard to find grounds for offence there.

However, I do see the point that, according to our own constitution, religion and state (including public schools) are supposed to be kept separate. So, this practice, or the words included in the recitation, shouldn't have begun in the first place. But they did, and now it's tradition. It's also one that really serves no purpose.

It's always so hard for us to challenge traditions, especially if they don't serve a purpose. If some practice is in place, it seems there must be some huge deal to cause it to change. So, some people are making a huge deal out of this. I wish we could just collectively agree that a tradition is pointless and discontinue. But, it seems there must be controversy for there to be change.
