classicfilmnoir BASICS
1. Name: Emily
2. Age: 19
3. At what age did you first discover Judy?: 2
4. At what age did you become a big fan of Judy?: Always a fan, became a BIG fan at age 11.
FAVORITE
1. Films: Presenting Lily Mars, Meet Me In St. Louis, A Star Is Born, Babes On Broadway, Girl Crazy, Summer Stock, I Could Go On Singing.
2. Songs: Rock-A-Bye Your Baby With A Dixie Melody, Swanee, Stormy Weather, How About You?, Heartbroken, I Feel A Song Coming On, Comes Once In A Lifetime, Hello Bluebird, By Myself, I Could Go On Singing, You Go To My Head, etc.
3. Written biography: "Judy" by Gerold Frank is the best Judy biography overall (in my opinion). "Heartbreaker" by John Meyer amuses the Hell out of me, but it's also very... wrong.
4. Documentary: The A&E Biography and "American Masters" Judy Garland: By Myself, even though I hate Isabel Keating.
5. Website: jgdb.com
6. Quote from one of her films: "The strange things you see when you haven't got a gun!"
7. Quote from Judy, herself: "A lot of people hit me in the nose. I gotta kinda nice nose."
8. Album: Judy at Carnegie Hall and Judy In Love
9. Concert performance (filmed or recorded): The Carnegie Hall performance!
10. Episode of The Judy Garland Show: Episode #6 (June Allyson & Steve Lawrence), Episode #3 (Liza Minnelli & Soupy Sales), and Episode #18 (Martha Raye & Peter Lawford), but I truly enjoy every freaking episode. That show was a treasure trove of hilarity.
11. Judy "era": 1941-1943 and 1961-early 1964.
12. Judy hairstyle: Her hair in 1943 was marvelous.
13. Story you've heard Judy tell: The HELLOEVERYBODYTHISISHAPPYHARRY story is definitely the summation of my life - I work at a drug store called Happy Harry's (it's a Walgreens Pharmacy), so that story is literally quoted almost every day of my life. Originally told on Jack Paar, it also made an appearance on The Johnny Carson Show in the late '60s. It was funnier on Jack Paar because it made more sense, considering her state of mind.
14. Interview: Hmm... I'll go with the hilarious HELLOEVERYBODYTHISISHAPPYHARRY interview, because it turns into a mess of thrown cue cards, pushed chairs, and carrying.
15. Outfit/Costume: The Girl Crazy "Embraceable You" dress and half of the wardrobe from Presenting Lily Mars
16. Dance sequence: The Portland Fancy from Summer Stock and the Presenting Lily Mars finale!
17. Co-star: This is tough, because I really do not care for most of her male co-stars. I do not enjoy Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire doesn't thrill me, Robert Walker is an awkward alcoholic, Mickey Rooney is annoying, James Mason gives me heartburn, Dirk Bogarde is a douche bag, etc. Can't I choose Gloria DeHaven or something?
18. Husband: David Rose, because he kept his mouth shut. And was actually good looking. And wrote hilarious orchestrations. (The Stripper?! BONANZA?! A HOLIDAY FOR STRIIINGS?!)
19. Child: Liza May Minnelli.
20. Sibling: JIMMIE.
THIS OR THAT
1. Liza or Lorna?: Lorna is a wonderful human being, but Liza May is my homegirl.
2. "Judy Speaks" or JudyCast?: Judy Speaks is HILARIOUS (well... the first 15 minutes when she's actually TRYING to be funny...), but JudyCast brings hilarious notions to life. Judy singing Smells Like Teen Spirit? Priceless.
3. The Kismet Medley, Porgy & Bess Medley, or West Side Story Medley?: The Porgy & Bess Medley, if not only for the awkward "PORRRRGGGGY I-I'Z YOUR WOOO-MAN NOW" part.
4. Esther Smith or Esther Blodgett?: Esther Blodgettttt.
5. The Palace '51 or The Palace '67?: The Palace '51. Never mention The Palace '67 to me. The suit haunts me, as well as Alisha.
6. "San Francisco" or "Chicago"?: San Francisco.
7. Love Finds Andy Hardy or Andy Hardy Meets Debutante?: Personally, Life Begins For Andy Hardy is my favorite out of the three Hardy movies with Judy, but out of these two, it would be Andy Hardy Meets Debutante.
8. Judy as a brunette or redhead?: Redhead.
9. Plump Judy or Skinny Judy?: Can I have in between, please?
10. Nellie Kelly, Sr. or Nellie Kelly, Jr.?: Junior! Senior was boooring.
11. The Pirate or A Child Is Waiting?: I love how these two films have absolutely nothing to do with each other. I choose The Pirate for it's over-dramaticness.
12. Babes In Arms or Babes On Broadway?: Babes On Broadway!
13. Aunt Addie or Aunt Inez?: Aunt Inez wears funny hats. I choose her.
14. The Born In A Trunk segment or Tea For Two?: TEA FOR TWO. "NOOO, I DON'T WANT ANY TEA!"
15. Ziegfeld Girl or Ziegfeld Follies?: Ziegfeld Girl - way more Judy AND Lana Turner falls down a flight of stairs. Judy's appearance in Ziegfeld Follies is nothing short of pure gold, however.
HAVE YOU...
1. Seen all of Judy's movies?: Yesss. Many many times over and over again.
2. Been to The Judy Garland Festival?: Unfortunately, no. But they send me funny things in the mail and I randomly have a Festival poster.
3. Met or been in the presence of any of her family members?: I've met and conversed for quite some time with Lorna in 2005 after John Fricke was kind enough to introduce us, and I almost met up with her again in 2007 (she was busy, and it was getting late, so we had to go), exchanged hellos and smiles with Liza in 2006 and then was in the presence of her again in 2007 and 2008, and was in the presence of Joe at the 2007 Liza concert - Alisha and I screamed his name. He heard us.
4. Baked a cake for her birthday?: You better believe it.
5. Had a Judy cake for your birthday?: Many timesss.
6. Watched Judy and listened to a CD of her's at the same time?: Yup.
7. Worn black on the anniversary of her death?: Hahaha, yes, I did that for many years. Also, Alisha, Ronnie, and I held a party on June 21st last year to commemorate the 39th anniversary of her last full day on earth. It was amazing.
8. Wasted countless ink cartridges on Judy pictures and/or magazine articles?: SO MANY TIMES.
9. Made a Judy scrapbook?: Best scrapbook everrrr.
10. Done a project/report on Judy?: I seriously did like 2-3 reports per year on that woman all through middle school and high school.
RANDOM
1. At what age did you first see Meet Me In St. Louis?: 2
2. Do you own any commemorative plates featuring Judy?: Yes, indeed. I kinda BROKE an Easter Parade plate on the eve of my 11th grade (or was it 12th grade?) homecoming. Bummer.
3. To which side of Judy at Carnegie Hall are you more inclined?: Side/Disc 2.
4. What is your favorite song from Judy & Liza's Palladium engagement?: Liza's Take Me Along Medley is the most hilarious thing I've ever heard. I adore it.
5. If you could estimate, about how much money do you think you've invested in Judy?: I... literally do not even want to THINK about that. Literal thousands and thousands.
6. Are you/were you a member of any Judy-related message boards/groups?: Yuuup. Although, I really don't frequent them any more because people are obnoxious.
7. What was the first Mickey-and-Judy film you ever saw?: Babes On Broadway! It's still my favorite, other than Girl Crazy.
8. What's your most prized Judy possession?: That is a TOUGH question. I really don't know. I have... so freaking much. It's really ridiculous.
9. When it comes to The Judy Garland Show, would you rather watch Rich Little impersonate to the tune of The Man That Got Away or watch Ken Murray's Hollywood Home Movies?: Judy's reactions to those home movies were priceless, and he was on the show several times, so I'll go with that.
10: With Judy, would you rather sneak out of a hotel room with all your clothes on or play baseball in the kitchen with raw ground beef?: The hotel room situation. It doesn't involve raw meat disease.
