I've been reading a lot lately, writing a lot. Thinking about visibility and resistance and strategies for both of them; thinking about the utter hopelessness of trying to change anything from within the system when the problem is the system. It is so exhausting to be involved in this kind of activism, so demoralizing ( Read more... )

I don't know whether this repsonse is helpful at all, but I personally think the best way to increase awareness and acceptance is tell people about yourself. Acceptance is found through understanding, and it's because the general populus don't understand that there is discrimination. You should by all means be yourself and express your individuality via your physical appearance but finding an obvious common ground with people who are supposedly normal will make them think twice about putting you in a box.

I love hearing about your views (came originally for the recs) xx

My probelm with that is -- I absolutely do not believe that being different than the norm means someone has an obligation to educate people about themselves. After all, it's not as though the literature doesn't exist; I know that doing the research is possible because I've done it. If people ask then I don't mind filling them in, usually, it's just that... it gets tiring, always having to inform people's context in order for them to understand a part, not even a huge part, of me -- and it is a part that they tend to equate with the whole then same way a gay person is defined by their sexuality. If that makes sense? (I'm sorry if it doesn't, I'm operating on three hours of sleep today!)

And thank you!

I should add that I do very consciously use my body and voice to be OUT. It is just tiring, sometimes, and frustrating.

It must be really frustrating. It's something that is so simple and straightforewardly (is that a word?) obivous to you. :) It's a lot to expect most people to WANT to understand so much as to actively research, which is so depressing.

three hours sleep is rather impressive. I'm a six hour minimum girl, making me a rubbish student!

Okay, have taken all of these. I really enjoy hearing your views because you tend to address things in a very different way to me but at the same time are far, far more articulate than I am. This post... okay, I'm really not up to being articulate here at all, but I'm usually not that affected by this kind of media and this post makes me want to actually sit down and figure out how to say things, so. At least you're working on somebody?

You don't know how much I enjoy this comment, seriously. I'm glad that I was able to make you want to sit down and figure things out. :DDD
