Help from Bostonians (and former Bostonians) needed!

I know that many of you live in the Boston area. I have a friend who is being interviewed for a job at Harvard and needs information about where he would be able to afford to live. The work will be at Harvard Medical School and at the Applied Math department (which I understand are in different parts of town), and he'll need to use public ( Read more... )

It's going to be tough to have a 30 minute commute I think -- unless you want that to be a 30 minute walk. There are a number of places 30 minutes away by bus/subway, but unless you live right at the stop, you're probably going to need to add in your 10-15 minutes of walking too. The problem is that you're looking at two areas that are over half an hour apart from one another on the T. Applied Math will be up in Harvard Square on the Red Line. Harvard Medical School is down in the Longwood Medical District on the Green line. You can find a place in between the two, but for that, you're basically looking at downtown near Park Street, and you're not going to find a decent three-bedroom place there for $1500.

Having said that, I would recommend the Somerville area. When wheeloffire and I were living in Somerville, it was about a twenty minute walk to Harvard Square (no direct buses) and about 45 minutes by T for her into Harvard Medical School. We were paying $1200 for a 2-bedroom place in an apartment building. I'm not sure what a 3BR place would look like, but it's somewhere to start. We were on Somerville Ave and Central Street, about three-quarters of a mile from Porter and a mile from Harvard.

So yeah, Somerville, but not right near Porter or Davis.

Best of luck to them!
