Lily arrived home late Wednesday night after her first driving class; she was working on getting her Driver's License to help with deliveries at the Auto Shop. Tired but still restless, Lily was also frustrated with cleaning so she set herself up in the guest bedroom to study. She was pretty on top of her school work, but this whole driving thing ( Read more... )

Draco shook his head. "No, I shouldn't get like that." he admits "It's just...you know, my family and all. They wouldn't like me getting interested in things like that. I guess I still think they control me."

Lily didn't want a fight, but she couldn't just let a statement like that go. She stepped back and looked up at him.

"But they don't control you. You have to know that. They don't."

A strong voice inside her head told her to back down, to keep this to herself, but her inner Gryffindor was screaming to be heard after being repressed for so long.

She continued, slowly, choosing her words carefully. "You are very much your own person and you deserve to make your own decisions based on what you believe. Your family is... 'misguided,' and you know that, you do. You've been with me for three years and if you're always going to live in fear of your family's outdated beliefs, there's no future for us."

Draco didn't know what to say. It seemed like she had been ready to say this for a long time and he wasn't prepared.
"I don't live in fear of them. I just...I'm just getting used to them being out of my life." he says "Ever since I started living among muggles I knew that my family's beliefs were wrong."

He sighed, still afraid to tell Lily the truth about his family. "You don't know the things they did...it took a while for me to get that they can't do anything to stop me."

"No, I don't know the things they did. I don't know because you won't tell me - anything. Three years and I still know nothing about your family." She hardly tried to cover the bitterness in her voice. She shouldn't have waited so long to say these things, because now she was unable to stop them from all tumbling out at once.

"And you think you're protecting me from knowing the 'horrid truth' but really all it's done is make me spend far too much time and energy imagining all of the different possibilities. Each scenario is worse than the last and I'm tired of the constant worrying and wondering."

She looked up at him, silently pleading with him to find something to say, something to do that would set her at ease. After a minute, she added, "And I don't even have my family any more. I know it takes time to really understand being on your own, being alone. Believe me, I get that."

For a split second Draco had the urge to sit her down and tell her what his family did. He doubted that any scenario she had come up with came anywhere near the truth. But he held back. The number one rule in the family was to not tell any outsider about the things they did. He had already told Lily what they had done was horrible, why wasn't that enough?
Draco sighed. "I'm not alone though." he says "I've got you. And you have me."

He had looked so close to confiding in her, but she could see renewed determination in his eyes as he quickly made the decision to continue hiding. How very Slytherin of him, after all. She was defeated once again.

"You have me - but no, I don't have you. Not really," she whispered, looking at the wall next to him.

Draco closed his eyes for a second. "What do you mean by that?" he asked "I love you."

There was no doubting that he meant it, but she was very troubled by the fact that he was hiding so much from her, even after all this time. Sure, in the beginning, until he coud be sure that he could trust her, but... three years. If he didn't trust her by now, would he ever? And to be so stubborn about it, even knowing how much it hurt her...

"I know you do." I just don't know if that's enough. "I didn't mean anything. Never mind. I love you too," she said, trying to project confidence into her voice.

Draco put his head against the door frame. He didn't want to do this. He had avoided talking about this for years. "Lily, tell me what you think my father is in jail for." he asks
