Good news: I'm in Chicago for the Stargate convention! I have autograph and photo op tickets with David Hewlett and Michael Shanks!

Bad news: My dog apparently damaged my hotel's carpet by the door while we were being tourists yesterday and the hotel charged me $700 for it.

Definitely call corporate tomorrow morning and go up the chain of command. And you really shouldn't have signed those slips until you talked to management because a) by signing you have said that you are at fault.

I wish that I could help you more but you might be out of luck. I am so sorry. :(

Thanks. The front desk clerk implied that I couldn't get my room keys reactivated until I signed, but now that I'm not in the moment I can see that's probably not true. Things will work out, but I'll definitely be meeting the public know to avoid this 'pet friendly' hotel.

I think that the front desk clerk totally took advantage of your surprise and confusion when confronted with a situation you didn't expect and that this is a case of coercion.

I also think the fact that your dog had - as they claim - damaged the carpet does not give them the right to withheld your access to the room (and everything that belonged to you and was in said room at this time). You rented it and therefore you had a contract they had to fulfill - the dog damaging the carpet is a case of them wanting compensation for said damage and has nothing to do with the contract regarding the rental.

Also - I don't know how it is in the US but demanding $700 without any proof how much the repair will actually cost? I doubt they could get away with that if it had happened over here in Germany.

Will your pet insurance not cover it? I know mine does cover me for certain types of damage to other peoples property.

My pet insurance reimburses me for her medical expenses. I've never heard of any covering damages. If it's a thing in America though I'll definitely look into now.
