“Oh my god, look-how cool!” Adam exclaimed, stepping up to the glass wall of the elevator as the doors closed and they began a slow ascent. “Is that mountains in the distance or clouds? I think we can catch sunset on the roof bar if we hurry!”
It took a couple minutes of Adam chattering to silence to realize that his boyfriend hadn’t responded, and he turned to find Sauli facing the door, staring fixedly at the digital display as it ticked off the floors in turn. Adam grinned and stepped up close behind him, wrapping his arms around Sauli and turning him around.
“You know,” Adam murmured into his ear, “life isn’t about the destination, it’s about the journey.”
Sauli pressed back against Adam and huffed. “That’s beautiful. What do I owe you for that jewel of wisdom?”
“Well, you’re kind of cute, and just my type, so I might be willing to work out a deal. How about you come up to my room and we’ll discuss terms?” Adam bent to kiss Sauli’s neck, but missed when Sauli craned his head to look at the display again.
“What floor did you say we were on? Why is this elevator so slow? Is there something wrong with it?
Adam laughed. “What? No. I’m pretty sure they just figure most people want to enjoy the view on the way up. And we’re on…” he glanced at the card in his hand. “The thirty-second floor.”
Sauli squirmed out of Adam’s arms and squatted down to retie the lace on his shoe. Adam watched, puzzled, noticing the faint tremor in his boyfriend’s hands.
“Baby, are you okay?” he began, just before an ear-splitting screech made his heart skip a beat, and the elevator shuddered hard and then stopped altogether.
“What the fuck?” Adam looked over at the display, but it was dark. He walked over and pressed the “open” button repeatedly, but nothing happened. “Are we supposed to press the alarm button, or will that just start an unholy racket?” He turned when he heard an odd sound. “Sauli?”
Sauli was kneeling on the floor, hands over his face, trembling. Adam quickly crouched down and put a hand on his shoulder. As if he’d been stung, Sauli flinched away and scrambled to his feet, breathing hard and shaking his head. His eyes were wide and unfocused in his terrified face, and he swiped at the doors as if they might open at his touch.
“Sauli, baby, what’s wrong?” Adam watched helplessly as Sauli panted, fists clenched against his eyelids. “Sweetheart, tell me what’s going on, please! Are you sick?”
“Ei, ei, ei,” Sauli gasped out, backing up into the corner, eyes clenched shut.
“No? Then what?” Adam asked, reaching towards Sauli but afraid to touch him again. “Wait, are you having a panic attack?”
Sauli hesitated, then nodded slightly. He was flushed and sweating, breath coming in short sharp pants. Adam stepped closer, careful not to touch him.
“It’s okay, baby, it’s gonna be alright, I promise. I’m right here with you, and we’re going to get through this together, okay?” Adam’s voice was low, gentle. “I want you to breathe with me, can you do that? Just follow my lead-we’re going to inhale for two counts and then exhale two counts.”
Adam demonstrated, exaggerating his breaths and counting out loud. For a while he thought it wasn’t going to work, it didn’t seem as if Sauli was paying attention, as if he was lost in some private hell, clenching and unclenching his hands and biting hard at his lip, but after couple of minutes, Sauli began to try to breath with Adam.
“That’s so good, babe, now we’ll inhale for four and exhale for four, okay?”
Several minutes later, Sauli’s breathing was calmer, and he opened his eyes, scanning the elevator rapidly before fixing his gaze on Adam’s face. Adam smiled.
“Do you want to sit down?” he asked, and at Sauli’s nod, guided him down and sat beside him on the carpet. This time, when Adam held out his hand, Sauli grasped it immediately and held on tight. Adam pulled him closer and rubbed his back.
“Are you better now?” he asked anxiously. “I was so scared-I wasn’t sure what to do to help you.”
“No, you were perfect. Your… insects were just right.”
In response to Adam’s perplexed look, Sauli explained, “You know… how someone knows how to do the right thing, without thinking about it.”
Adam’s face cleared. “Instincts,” he smiled, “and thank you.” He paused. “I’m so sorry. I should have remembered you used to have a thing about elevators.”
Sauli shook his head. “I did, but I have no problem for a long time. I think maybe, the glass wall? I don’t know. Suddenly I felt like I was going to die. I’m sorry, I feel like a stupid…” He starts to pull away, but Adam holds on.
“Hey,” he says, tipping Sauli’s face up with a finger under his chin. “No one talks shit about my boyfriend, not even my boyfriend, okay? I’ll kick their ass, no kidding.”
Sauli smirked. “Did you say kick, or kiss?”
Adam laughed and hugged him. He pulled out his cell phone and called the front desk, learning that they were working on the power to the elevator and expected to have them out in about ten minutes.
“Ten minutes, huh?” Sauli said. “I wonder how I can repay you for helping me…” his hand brushing up Adam’s thigh.
Adam laughed and grabbed Sauli’s hand before it could reach its destination, flicked his glance up at the ceiling. “Umm, I think the label might appreciate not having to deal with a leaked security camera sex vid. And I would appreciate not having to sing Whataya Want From Me all over again for the next three months…”
“Damn,” Sauli frowned. “Well, how about I tell you what I would do if there was not a camera?” He slid his hand behind Adam’s back, slipped it just inside his jeans, making Adam hitch a breath. Sauli leaned close, resting his head sweetly beside Adam’s, but his voice was like hot silk against Adam’s ear.
“If there was not a camera,” he whispered, “I would press you up against that glass so everyone could see you. I would take off your shirt so they could see how sexy you are, and your freckles, and how when I’m touching you, you get so hard.” Adam gasped, turned his face, but Sauli’s voice followed, soft and insistent.
“If there was not a camera,” he continued, “I would open your zipper, and I would touch your cock. I would be slow, very slow, and I would make everyone wait, and watch, while I make you crazy, wanting to come. And then finally, you tell me, like you do, you tell me ‘please,’ and then I make you come, all over the glass, and it’s dripping down, so hot.” Sauli’s breath is hot and erratic against Adam’s ear, his voice tripping over English words, such a turn-on, Adam can’t even believe it.
“Jesus fuck,” he gasps, adjusting the front of his pants as the sound of voices comes from outside the door. “I’m gonna get you back for this.”
Sauli just laughs. “I hope so!”
