Wow that sucks and I feel your pain. Mine is also messed up. The power jack isn't working at the moment and that's the kind of problem that requires purchasing and installing a new motherboard or, more likely, giving up on owning a working laptop and blowing $500 on a shiny new desktop. It sucks to lose data, but at least this doesn't sound like an expensive problem. It could even be a driver error. You might even be able to call the makers of the CD player and ask for advice. I remember having this problem and it was something really simple that I wouldn't have known about without asking. Had you backed up any of your data? I'm surprised Windows didn't prompt you to, since it does for installing Service Pack 2 and that doesn't even seem to do anything dangerous. Also, since it wasn't a full reinstall and reformatting of the hard drive, there's hope that it's still hidden in the computer somewhere. Maybe your school's ResTech or a local repair place or BestBuy can recover the data for a low price and with a moneyback

that does suck...uhhh..who is this?

and thanks for the suggestions..no I stupidly did not back up any of my data. Maybe ResTech will..when we called them about my computer problems they didn't seem to want to help.

It's me. For some reason, even though I was logged in and didn't change it from the default, livejournal logged me out in the middle of checking my friendslist. I guess they were having computer issues too.
