Comment on Last Airbender (2010)

Watched it for 20 minutes and had to stop.
I know reviews were bad but I wanted to watch it myself, with an open mind, however....

It's really bad, miscasting and/or truly bad bad acting. It's..... bad acting. None of the actions or emotions they are trying to convey come through their body language or facial expressions. Absurd.

They should scrap

Absolutely agree - the cartoon was so brilliant, funny and with great characters and stories.

The movie characters were all so serious and dull. The Aang could not act, the roles were miscast - and they just rushed the story.

It's a shame, with todays effects they could have done so much to make a great movie.

Btw - have you seen the new Avatar, the Legend of Korra? It looks excellent!

Avatar: The Last Airbender was, IS amazing in part because it has several levels of depth. In my humble opinion.

It deals actually with rather profound and tragic themes, but you can get into them as much as you want. You want to watch a bunch of kids run around having adventures, you can. You want to contemplate what it means to be sole survivor, refuge or even a child oppressed by its parents, you can. And, on a side note, some apparently consider Aang to be rather bland and uninteresting, but his characterization is incredibly complex in my view.

Anyway, the movie is truly disappointing. I'm putting it in the same basket as that horror called Catwoman with H. Berry.... Not to mention that it's ridiculous that they tried to put the whole season in 90 minutes.

As for the Legend of Korra - I really like it. Korra is very personable and interesting character and the rest of the cast seems promising as well. The theme explored - non-benders feeling slighted/endangered - is one that needed to be addressed and I'm rather curious to

I don't think the casting was nearly as problematic as the... lack of heart and humor, for which I blame the director. My concern from the beginning of the trailers coming out was that Aang always seemed so grim. I told my kids, if the first thing out of his mouth isn't something along the lines of "Wanna go penguin sledding?" then the movie would be a failure. It wasn't, and it was. Sokka without the constant sarcasm? Aang without his childlike glee? That's not Avatar.

Yeah, they erased part of their characters. Along with most of the plot as far as I saw while skipping to the end...
Aang was not-Aangish, definitely. However, what irritated me the most, from the first scene onward, is Katara. I kept looking at the familiar scenes and I simply could not recognise the girl on the screen as Katara. THAT was example of inner fire missing.

And then Zuko turned into a caricature of an evil villain. Yeah he was loud and stupid, but this all came from inner turmoil and suffering, not hysteria.
