Living it up in the Garden

Jun 26, 2010 15:59

I think maybe we garden to find our way back to Eden. It's hard to think of anything that makes me as happy as nurturing the plants along and then giving in to the temptation to eat their fruits. Last night HJ and I ate salad that was a mix of greens from the salad table, basil leaves, and lambs quarters (not grown on purpose, but very plentiful). ( Read more... )

We're just starting to move into a state of true bounty; up until now we had a lot of "ooooh, that's ready ::chompnom:: And now it's gone."

Nothing is actually ripe yet, but we've got over 70 tomatoes set with more flowers coming in, so it is just a matter of time until we're eating 'em like crazy and putting by sauce and salsa.

I'm on the lookout for a very free or cheap big cedar planter to put strawberries in next year. The house we're moving into definitely isn't a forever home -- we'll likely only be there 1-3 years so I don't want to put strawberries in the ground.

How are things coming with your house purchase?

Ah. You aren't monitoring Facebook...

I haven't gotten around to writing about it on LJ, because what happened was so damned depressing. I heard about it while I was away visiting my friend in Urbana-Champaigna couple of days ago.

Remember how I said in March the realtor told us the offer had been accepted, and we were waiting for the bank to appraise the place so the sale could go through?

Well, apparently, the bank misled the realtor and the offer was never accepted--and that's why it was taking so fucking long. I only learned this on Wednesday. That's two months we could have been looking for another house.

So, not so hot. We're scoping out other choices. Jim is pissed for us, and talking about nicer places in better neighborhoods, and giving me more help with the financing.

Ugh. That's craptastick. I hope you find a place that's lovely enough to make you glad the first house fell through.

I've never joined facebook. Seems like just about every time I think I'm going to have to cave in and finally do it there's some new hullabaloo about privacy/selling your information/etc and I manage to put it off again. I figure my LJ and google addictions are enough. Relatedly, I wish google Buzz had been launched in a less stupid and foot-shooting way, I would happily have used it. As it is, almost everyone I know opted out.

Actually... I did some research and I think we have carpetweed, not chickweed. Chickweed is a spring thing, carpetweed is a heat-season weed and the pictures are a dead giveaway for what we've got. It still might be edible or usable, but I doubt it - and my dreams of making a large batch of chickweed salve are bust too.
