Stating the obvious on Haiti

All of the aid and money being sent Haiti's way aren't going to do a thing to make the country a better place. Just as it went from miserable hellhole to hellish disaster zone overnight, it'll simply revert to being a miserable hellhole, at best, once the goods have been handed out, the soldiers are gone, and the media has long since moved on to

No one is interested in taking up that task.

I think the current administration would try it. For a certain kind of Leftist pol colonialism (suitably clothed in the right rhetoric) would be irresistable.

I don't think we have the patience and sane government policy to make it work. It would take a grasp of reality that some pols lack, and a willingness to eschew ideology in favor of stuff that works. They'd try, they'd fail and everone would be worse off than before.
