Stating the obvious on Haiti

All of the aid and money being sent Haiti's way aren't going to do a thing to make the country a better place. Just as it went from miserable hellhole to hellish disaster zone overnight, it'll simply revert to being a miserable hellhole, at best, once the goods have been handed out, the soldiers are gone, and the media has long since moved on to ( Read more... )

No one is interested in taking up that task.

I think the current administration would try it. For a certain kind of Leftist pol colonialism (suitably clothed in the right rhetoric) would be irresistable.

I don't think we have the patience and sane government policy to make it work. It would take a grasp of reality that some pols lack, and a willingness to eschew ideology in favor of stuff that works. They'd try, they'd fail and everone would be worse off than before.

I don't think Obama has the vision for that sort of thing, or the willingness to take a risk.
