Fright Props is moving...to Florida. This means that Kathleen and I have to decide if we want to move to Florida...in three months. We would be living in a town called Clearwater on the gulf coast. Here's my major list of pros and cons so far ( Read more... )

I remember I went down to look at Ringling Art School in Serasota many years ago. I looked at the school, I looked around at the state of Florida, then I looked at my parents and said, "No."

Florida is a bad place to go to if you hate heat, and then there's the oppressive humidity, which is way worse than minnesota/slightly worse than DC. It was october when I went and I was sweating buckets, and this is coming from a person that loathes winter.

Housing is retardedly expensive (though I don't know about Clearwater).

Plus it's frickin' creepy and conservative and full of rich, old people. Jerry Seinfeld's parents aren't far off from the truth.

Besides, for me, the farther away from Scientologists I am, the better.

Yeah, the heat is pretty much the #1 drawback for me. Living expenses don;t seem too bad in the area where we will be, especially if we share a two bedroom with a friend or something.

Does this mean you're going to move to Florida too?

Your life plans change quicker than anyone I've ever met.

this is hard! on first thought this sounds cool. a drastic change that would at very least be interesting and novel for a while. but i can see why you'd be reluctant to be so far from family (and friends, of course). this is hard, dude.

I think the friends part would be the hardest. It's really really hard to make friends without being involved in some sort of school or program in which other people are also looking for friends. Scott's had his friends since high school. Can you really imagine him going to a bar, approaching some dude and saying, "Hey there, ol' chap. How 'bout a little D&D?"

But who knows, maybe that would be a good experience. I'm trying to convince Cory to move to NY with me when he graduates, so I can't knock the "starting over somewhere else" thing. But it is a lot of work. Finding somewhere to live. Learning how to get around. Finding the cool places to hang out. Making friends. Dealing with how much you miss old friends/family. It ain't easy. Though I am writing this to a chic who's picked up and moved to a new city numerous times and done just fine.

you just have to know one cool person who has a social network and go from there.

that's a tough call. If it were somewhere a little more awesome I would say definitely. but I hear the gulf coast is nicer than the atlantic coast. I'd give it a shot.

hey, you might be interested in the Tetsumi Kudo exhibit at the Walker. lots of dicks & snails & body parts.
