Looks Like a Solo Tonight (aka Kurt's Party)

Apr 07, 2011 23:39

Given that Kate and Kurt had a small army working under them (most of Kurt's associates combined with the large coterie of teens Kate was able to round up), one would think that everything would have been finished long before the party started. And it was. Technically. Kate just wasn't going to leave anything to chance. Tonight was too important on ( Read more... )

They had worked so hard for this moment, that there was no room for it to go wrong. Because if it did go wrong, Demitri didn't know what he was going to do. Probably never leave his room ever again. Because he wouldn't be able to face his dad. And he'd never go over to Kate's ever again because Blaine would probably kill him.

Oh yeah. This was going amazing.

Now, he was wishing he sneaked a shot of something earlier to calm his nerves. But that might not have ended well. So, instead, he sneaked into the kitchen to find Kate.

"Need me to do anything?"

She shook her head, slipping the headset off. "As long as everything arrived safely from the Blackbird offices, we should be okay. All there's left to do is wait for my dad to arrive at eight thirty. Then we'll gather everyone and hope this works like we planned..."

Sierra popped up, munchies in hand. "Oops if I'm interrupting, but seriously, Kate, this party is ridiculously nice."

"No. Not at all. Demitri and I were just doing last minute things." She smiles at Sierra, stealing a munchie. Damn she did not realize just how hungry she was. "Thanks...you having fun?"

The party was an unexpected impromptu gig, set up by the same mischievous children that made it possible for Kurt to get to get to this point. A few of his wonderful assistants had come into town to help with Courage, and he managed to rope them into helping Kate and Demitri set up with the others. There had to be a hint of magic to this whole ordeal - Kate somehow fulfilled every one of his ridiculous requests in the decorations and catering; friends and family, and the friends that were more akin to family than anything else somehow made it to their humble house; and perhaps the most magical of all, Kurt was happy.

He'd been happy for years, with raising his son and fashioning clothes for Blackbird, but at that moment in time, on an inconsequential Saturday in an inconsequential year, Kurt was really and truly happy. Relinquished of his married name that had brought him both great joy and immeasurable pain for over a decade and relaxed at home with the greatest people alive, he was happy ( ... )

It warmed Rachel's heart to see Kurt happy. Too long had he been grieving. Grabbing a drink off one of the passing trays, she made her way over to him, waiting until he had finished talking to a few of his fashion colleagues.

"Congrats, Mr. Hummel. This is quite the shindig. Much better than my basement party our Junior Year."

As he turned from his fellow executives to greet her, Kurt made a small approving smile at her choice of attire for the party. "True as that may be, I think we both know whose party will be better remembered in twenty years." A joke more than anything, but there was some truth to it. The gatherings they had as teenagers were few and far between, but that night held a lot of meaning for a good majority of them.

"And may I just say, you look beautiful tonight. My little Rachel, all grown up."

"You can thank the kids for that. I think Audrey was on the phone with Katie and Demitri for an hour, describing everything in my closet..." She shook her head, ever so slightly amused.

"And the night is still young...anything can happen." And oh boy was something about to happen. Rachel felt a bit guilty about knowing Kurt and Blaine had been played and but good...but she also was a firm believer in the end result. So she'd live with the guilt...and just transfer it over to her children the next time they mentioned leaving home.

When 8:15 came around and Blaine still hadn't shown at the party, Kate was more than a little nervous. While deep down she knew he'd show -- as he would never ever miss a chance to hear her sing -- she couldn't help but worry that maybe he would make good on his "threat" to not show.

No. He'd never do that to her, right?

She was actually quite lucky that he did show at all, and should probably be thanking her aunt profusely for it. Sierra had stopped by to check on things after Blaine had tried a stalling tactic on the phone, and Blaine hadn't even been dressed yet. That was at 7:30, and he'd been almost desperate enough to call his mother, to help him waste time. Thankfully for both Kate's plan and his sanity, Sierra's arrival and the swift kick in the ass she managed to give him helped get him to the party before TOO late. 8:30 wasn't late, was it?

Blaine felt extremely out of place here, even among people he had known for years, who were practically family. There was just something about being at a fashion party, particularly one thrown for and by Kurt Hummel, that had him on edge. There had been clothes chosen for him by Kate laid out, but Blaine had ended up in something far more to his own liking, and more casual than intended. It was still nice, sure, but it was Blaine's version of nice rather than his daughter's.

No. 8:30 was perfect. 8:30 was exactly when she wanted him there, which is why she had told him 8:00. Face it, Blaine, your kid knows you too well...

Spotting him the moment he comes in the door, Kate winds her way through the crowd, a glass of...something...in her hand. Something that is obviously not soda and that she has drank half of...

Apparently drinking before a performance WAS good for the nerves. Thanks for that tip, Aunt Rachel...

"There you are! I was afraid you weren't going to come!"

Oh, such a sneaky child. If he ever found out that she had played him like that, there would be issues with them. And if he found out Sierra was in on it . . . Oh, that would be an interesting conversation. As it stands, though, he was unaware of that, straightening his tie out of habit before smoothing his shirt just a little.

When his daughter had finally reached him, though, the first thing he noticed was the glass in her hand, and the fact that he could absolutely tell it was not soda. His frown was there immediately, gaze slightly stern.

"Where did you get that?"
