today i got home from the beach. we went to duck, north carolina, on the outer banks, for those who would like to know. it was incredible, and relaxing. i read a bunch of books during the week, which was my goal: to read for pleasure! i guess i am obligated to review them, briefly:

diary, by chuck pallahniuk: fucked up, in a good way, which i guess could characterize any of his books. definitely gave me nightmares, and took about 50 pages to really get into, but worth reading.

the nubian prince, by juan bonilla: about a scout who recruits prostitutes, sort of. kind of stream-of-consciousness, but interesting and very puzzling, i think. good to ponder, if you care for that sort of thing.

fluke, by christopher moore: about whales and aliens, but not aliens really. not as good as lamb, but interesting, with good character development and interesting theories about life.

lamb, by christopher moore: ok i read this one already, but i finally bought it so i had to reread it and it merits mentioning. awesome, comical, best appreciated if jewish, and gave me what i think is my best possible understanding of christianity. one of my favorite books ever. thanks for the recommendation, shelly!

about a boy, by nick hornby: i read "a long way down", same author, and appreciated it (thanks, lisa!) but I think his books are all pretty similar. this one they made a movie about, with hugh grant, and it was much better in book form, of course. the hilarity was much more eloquent and complete. funny if a bit drawn out, and no real conclusion.

mirror, mirror, by gregory maguire: same author as "wicked," which was MUCH more creative and interesting. i found this hard to slog through, because even wicked is dense at times. read wicked and don't bother with this one.

so after unpacking the car and making tacos for dinner (it was my brother's birthday today, YAY andrew being 17!), i set off for a night on the town. i met shelly, laura, jamie pottern, linden, eva (!), davie, karin, and april at giffords in lovely hip bethesda and we chilled. then we did some book shopping in barnes and noble and I helped april pick some things. it was so nice to see everyone again and i think i talked too much, but is that unusual? i love you guys and i'm sorry i stayed away for so long...

then everyone departed and jamie and i had a heart-to-heart. we talked about religion, marriage, god, philosophy, and words.

words are completely inadequate for communication. even the great philosophers said so. so why am i trying to convey how i feel right now? i feel lucky but undeserving, happy but questioning. i am looking forward to two weeks of chilling, sorting, unpacking, organizing, hanging out, reading, and packing. i have re-discovered my love of driving at night. i just wish i didn't have to ask my brother if i could use the car.

it feels so good to be home.
