They are languages based on there number set. Binary is base 2 Hex is base 16 and Oct is base 8. So Binary would be sets of 1s and 0s Hex would be 1 to 9 then A to F with 10 equaling 16 in base 10 math and so on. These are also used in computers where the character sets can be rendered into a value of up to 255 and then expressed in one of the other base maths. These are quicker to transfer between computers.
