because when you're in a position of honest right, and you make an honest point, that others know to be true as well, but haven't quite accepted that fact for themselves yet...they get offended and angry that it was popped up in front of them while they were trying so hard to put it off...in retaliation(self defense?)they turn it back on you in the form of a guilt trip to assuage their wounded prides and egos... at the expense of someone who cared enough to mention it in the first place.
you feel guilty because you respect your mother... you feel guilty because you care.
