Sleep

Everyone and their mothers know that Jessica Jung of Girls’ Generation has an intense sleeping habit. In fact, “intense” is an understatement. The girl can nap up to 14 hours a day.

Tiffany questions if a 14 hour nap can even be considered a nap, but she tries not to dwell too much on it. When Tiffany first discovered Jessica’s bizarre hobby, she couldn’t really believe it. Sure, napping is a normal thing for everyone, but napping 7 times a day is the norm for Jessica.

When they first debuted, Tiffany became worried that Jessica secretly had a medical condition that required her to rest so much. Sooyoung and Hyoyeon had to sit the worried girl down and explain to Tiffany that the naps were normal and in actuality, if Jessica wasn’t getting the nap time she needed, then that would be the right time for Tiffany to panic.

Jessica’s typical schedule for the day would be sleep, eat, sleep in the car, variety show, sleep in the car, practice, sleep by the a/c, perform, eat, sleep on the way home, and sleep in the dorm.

Something like that.

Eventually, Tiffany learns to cope with the sloth like behavior and gets used to it.

Until Jessica becomes her girlfriend.

Now, beauty time is a necessity and Tiffany understands that, but as Jessica’s girlfriend, Tiffany finds it hard to spend time with her when she is always sleeping.

You just can’t do much when your partner’s unconscious all the time.

And don’t get her started on the whole “watching-you-sleep-thing.” It doesn’t matter who thinks that’s cute and loving and all that mushy stuff - Tiffany just finds that plain creepy. Plus, who could really watch someone sleep for 14 hours straight? You would have to be inhuman to be capable of that.

So here Tiffany is, 11:47 PM, standing by the doorway of her own room, not surprised to see a passed out Jessica on her bed, right arm resting above her head on the pillow. The blonde had picked up the habit somewhere along their relationship road to just sleep in Tiffany’s bed without telling her.

With a sigh, Tiffany shuts the door softly behind her as she sulks over to the kitchen, eyes meeting with Taeyeon’s.

“Asleep again?”

“Of course.”

Taeyeon just chuckles as she opens the refrigerator and pulls out a bottle of milk. Tiffany plops herself on the high chair and lets her forehead dive straight onto the counter.

“Woah, Fany.” Taeyeon cracks the bottle open softly as her eyebrow raises at the brunette.

Tiffany turns her head to the side and lets her cheek rest on the cool surface.

“I really don’t get how she can sleep so much. I mean, I get that she’s tired and all - we’re all tired, really. But… how can she just… sleep?”

Another light chuckle escapes Taeyeon’s mouth.

“Does it bother you?”

Tiffany sighs softly. “Sort of? I want her to rest and all, but I don’t like that I haven’t really spent time with her.”

After Taeyeon finishes a gulp of her milk, a satisfying grin sets on her mouth.

“With all the Music Core MCing and the separate schedules, you’re feeling a bit down about not seeing her, right?”

Tiffany nods her head, which is a feeble attempt since her cheek is stuck to the counter.

Finished with her fill of milk for the day, Taeyeon caps the bottle and returns it to the refrigerator. She walks over to Tiffany and rests her hand on her shoulder.

“Just tell her the obvious, Fany.”

“What? That she sleeps too much and it’s… annoying me? I don’t even know if that’s the right term.”

“No, silly. Tell her that you miss her.”

To this, Taeyeon leaves with a grin as Tiffany’s ears redden.

It’s 12:03 AM and Tiffany finds herself slipping under the covers next to Jessica. She does not bother with being noiseless since it was difficult to wake Jessica up with any amount of noise. The twin size bed makes it hard for them to fit, but Tiffany always finds a way to squish and squirm into a comfortable position side by side with her. Jessica’s right arm is in the way of Tiffany’s spot on the pillow so Tiffany links her hand with it and rests their hands in the small space between their bodies. It takes her a few moments, but soon she’s content with her placement and her breathing begins to even. Her eyelids flutter and Jessica’s face a few inches away from her is the last thing she sees for the night.

And then Jessica speaks up and Tiffany’s eyes bolt open.

“Why did you move my arm?”

Tiffany glances down at their linked hands.

“Because - Wait, have you been awake this whole time?”

“Yes. Your turn to answer.” Jessica juts her bottom lip forward.

“Because… it’s in my way?”

Jessica just giggles at her. She unhooks her right hand from Tiffany’s grasp and slides it to its original position while using her other hand to gently place Tiffany’s head onto her right arm.

“Silly. You’re supposed to sleep on it. That’s why it’s always in that position when I sleep.”

Tiffany blushes at Jessica’s small gesture. It is things like these that get her heart every time. They stay silent for a few seconds, taking in the moment.

“Jessi.”

“Mhh?”

Hesitating, Tiffany takes Jessica’s left hand and starts drawing patterns on her palm.

“Tiffany?”

Shyly, Tiffany lets her bangs obscure her face.

“Can - can we not sleep tonight?”

“Eh?”

Tiffany stops drawing the patterns and lets out a soft sigh.

“I just… I miss you a lot. Tonight… I just want to talk and talk until the sun rises. I don’t want to sleep tonight - I just want to spend time with you.”

A grin appears on Jessica’s face.

“Sure.”

---

They talk and talk, for what it seems like hours about everything and yet nothing. It’s their time to catch up on their lives, to listen to their own voices in the silent night, and to never let go of their joined hands.

“Jessi, I have a question for you.”

“Mhh?”

“Why do you sleep so much?”

Tiffany feels a little foolish after asking and Jessica ends up teasing her.

“If I told you the answer, I would have to kill you after.” She says this with a stone-faced expression.

A fake gasp emits from Tiffany’s mouth.

“You would have to face the wrath of thousands of angry fanboys and fangirls plus seven very upset sisters if you did that.”

They both break out into a laughing fit over their odd sense of humor. Not wanting to let go of the opportunity, Tiffany pushes the subject further. Her curiosity is getting the best of her.

“Really, Jessi. Do you sleep a lot because you’re that tired? Or?”

Jessica pulls her closer and entangles their legs into a deeper mess.

“I’ll tell you, but don’t laugh, ok?”

Tiffany nods her head eagerly as she anticipates the answer to the childish mystery.

“I used to sleep because I was tired all the time. But now… now I sleep because of two reasons.”

“What are they?” Tiffany quickly asks her.

Jessica just laughs at her deep interest in the subject.

“The first is… that it kills time.”

“As in, makes time go faster?”

“Yes.”

Tiffany’s eyebrows furrow together slightly.

“But why do you want time to go faster?”

“So that I can see you faster.”

“Wha-“ Tiffany’s eyes widen and she blushes furiously.

“I’m not very good at waiting. I don’t like it when I can’t see you. Sleeping makes the time go faster, which means I can see you faster without having to wait. And it turns out, most of the time, when I wake up from my sleep, you’re by my side.”

A lopsided grin presents itself on Tiffany’s face.

“And the second reason?”

“Dreams.”

“What do you dream about?”

“Pirates, dolphins, the past, the future, cows, everything. But most of the time - you.”

Tiffany doesn’t really understand how Jessica has managed to make her blush so much in one night.

“See, I figured, if I can’t see you in my reality, I can at least see you in my dreams.”

Maybe the whole “you-sleep-too-much-it-was-starting-to-annoy-me-thing” could be forgiven.

Tiffany doesn’t know what to say so she pulls the girl forward into a deep embrace, squeezing with all her strength. Jessica just gasps at the intensity of the hug and tries to return it just as strongly, but Tiffany is stronger than her.

“I can’t… breathe…”

Tiffany just laughs as she lets go.

“I’m sorry… I just -“

This time, it’s Jessica’s turn to pull her into another intense embrace.

“I didn’t say let go.”

Again, Tiffany laughs as Jessica engulfs her with her warmth. The mixture of their strawberry and banana scents wafts through Tiffany’s nose and she finds herself content for the night.

“I love you, Jessi.”

“I love you, too.”

Jessica releases her strong grip on Tiffany’s body and shifts them both into a more comfortable position for cuddling.

“Hey Tiffany.”

Jessica waits for Tiffany to respond, but is met with silence.

“Tiffany?”

She turns her head to see the brunette deep into slumber.

Jessica laughs at the irony and gives her a goodnight kiss on her forehead.

“And she said she didn’t want to sleep tonight.”
