Warmth
If Yoona had to describe herself in one word, she would pick “thin.”
Sure, she knew that she was pretty and a good actress. Males set her as their ideal type and females wanted to be her. Call her cocky for acknowledging these compliments, but there’s a fine line between cockiness and self-appreciation, and Yoona was no fool in the matter of awareness.
But right now, all Yoona could think about is how thin she is.
Being thin is a good thing in a sense, but it has a major drawback that irks Yoona.
See, Yoona gets cold easily and she blames it on the lack of meat on her bones because of her thinness and sensitive nerves. Jessica used to tease Yoona, saying that she should be dubbed as the “Ice Princess” instead because she was literally colder than Jessica was at all times. Additional layers of clothing don’t seem to help Yoona defrost either.
Now imagine always being cold as you try to sleep.
Being cold and being able to move around is one thing, but when you’re in bed, you need to stay still to rest and that exactly was Yoona’s problem. She couldn’t move around to provide warmth. Add the troublesome quality of being easily cold with a blasting air conditioner and you have a freezing, shivering, teeth chattering Yoona who has multiple layers on, which don’t seem to be doing much for her.
So why doesn’t she turn off the air conditioner?
Because the other eight girls in the dorm were always hot all the time like there wasn’t enough cool air wafting from the air conditioner in the world that could satisfy them. Oh and Jessica’s first love seems to be the air conditioner and Yoona would never dream of taking that away from her. So the circumstances resulted in a meat locker-like room for Yoona, which led her to develop a hatred of nights simply because she would have to try to fall asleep freezing cold. As if falling asleep wasn’t hard enough at times, try falling asleep while your whole body trembles from the chilly atmosphere.
So why doesn’t she ask the members to lower the a/c?
Because Yoona is a person who puts herself behind others. She loves the girls like they were her own family and would never do anything to benefit herself if it didn’t benefit the others.
So Yoona sucks it up, every single day, starting from the day Taeyeon, Sooyoung, and her room together to the first day Yuri and her share a room. Before the new room arrangements, Taeyeon insisted on not letting the newly announced girlfriends room together, but Sunny proved that it was better that way than having them be separate and then invade each other’s space with a third wheel in the room. Hyoyeon had helped prove Sunny’s point by adding certain awkward testimonies of Jessica and Tiffany’s interactions in her shared room with Jessica.
Yoona thought her chilly nights would remain routinely cold, but leave it to the first night with her new roommate slash girlfriend that everything changes. She pulls her blanket around her tighter as she shudders slightly in bed.
“Yoona?”
Yoona stills her body, trying to stop the shivers as she glances at Yuri, who is standing next to the light switch, ready for bed.
“Yes?”
“Are you cold?”
Yoona shakes her head.
“Are you sure? You’re shuddering a bit.”
“I’m okay.”
Yuri’s eyebrows come together a little bit as she tilts her head to the side, but she says nothing more related to the subject.
“Okay. Good night.”
“Night.”
Yuri switches the lights off and then makes her way to her bed in the darkness. They both lie there in silence for a few minutes before Yoona turns over to face the wall and curl slightly up in a ball. She thinks it marginally helps her with warmth if her limbs are closer together, but it doesn’t do much for her. Letting out a sigh, she shuts her eyes, hoping that sleep will be kind tonight and overtake her soon.
Suddenly, she hears a rustling coming from Yuri’s side of the room. Yoona’s ears perk up as light steps come towards her. The covers are lifted and a draft sweeps over her body temporarily. The bed sinks in lightly as Yuri settles herself next to the younger girl and sheets envelope them. A warm arm drapes over her body as Yuri presses herself against Yoona’s back.
“You’re a bad liar, Yoona.”
This causes Yoona to turn over, facing Yuri in the darkness. She can barely make out part of her face as the moonlight streams through the window. Yoona says nothing in response as she stares into Yuri’s eyes.
“Taeyeon told me you get cold easily at night,” Yuri runs her fingers over the back of Yoona’s hand, “Wow, you really do.”
Yoona blinks twice.
“…She knows I get cold easily?”
“She also knows that you won’t say anything because you’re too nice - because you know how hot Sooyoung gets at night.”
Yoona blushes slightly, berating herself for not expecting the all-knowing leader to know her weakness.
Suddenly, Yuri pulls the younger girl closer and gently pushes her head forward, nose snuggling against warm neck comfortably. Then she intertwines her legs around Yoona’s and her hand makes its way underneath the back of Yoona’s shirt. This causes Yoona to jerk slightly at the sudden touch, but Yuri does not move it any farther up in reaction to Yoona’s movement. Yoona’s heart pulses far faster than it should and she can hardly control her breathing. Never before have they been in such a position and Yoona knows she’s blushing madly right now.
“Silly girl.” Slowly, Yuri rubs her hand up and down Yoona’s lower back to generate heat. “If you’re cold, let me be your warmth.”
The words process through her mind slowly as the soothing sensation relaxes her. Then she grins foolishly as Yuri’s body heat wraps around her, making her feel safe and fuzzy inside.
There’s just something so much better about warmth radiating off of another person compared to thin sheets and layers of clothing. Perhaps it’s because the warmth that she receives from Yuri seems to travel to every inch of her body, producing some sort of warm feeling that erupts deeply in her heart.
It becomes a routine for her nights to end with her snuggled warmly against Yuri as the older girl rubs her back gingerly to sleep.
Even when their schedules conflict, they will still end up in the same position in bed, simply because Yuri will wake up in the middle of the night, ditching her Mickey Mouse stuffed animal that she was cuddling with and amble over to Yoona’s bed. And on occasion when she has the strength to wait up for Yoona, she will with a sloppy grin on her face welcoming her home.
Her actions cause Yoona to look forward to nights instead of hating them.
And it’s during those times that Yoona feels extremely thankful that she has someone that she loves to come home to and to wake up to.
Because simply, what was better than that?
