Chapter 3

It’s not until three days later that Yoona receives a call from Yuri.

Three long, grueling days.

When her cell phone rings, she practically lunges across her bedroom, diving for it on her bed.

“Hello?”

“Hi, is this Im Yoona?”

She recognizes Yuri’s voice.

“Yes!”

Yoona almost shouts it and she feels stupid for doing so.

“It’s Kwon Yuri… There’s something I am curious about.”

“Yes?”

“How exactly do you plan on helping me find my way?”

Lying is never a good thing.

Yoona takes a deep breath and speaks out the truth.

“To be honest… I’m not exactly sure myself. But I think that two heads are better than one at times. Let’s go back to your beginning together and see what happens along the way.”

It’s honest and naïve, but she hopes Yuri won’t mind.

“I see…”

There’s a long pause and it makes Yoona bite her lip nervously, but she stops once Yuri speaks up again.

“Well then, I hope your offer is still up. I’ve decided to teach you. I can’t guarantee you’ll learn anything from a lost soul like me, but hopefully you can. When are you free?”

“That’s good! Great! I’m happy to receive lessons. I don’t have classes on weekends, so I’ll be free then.”

“Okay. Let’s work out a schedule then.”

They decide afternoons to evenings Friday through Sunday would work best for them. They agree to meet at Yuri’s art studio, which is conveniently behind her house. Yoona squeals a little inside that she will be able to work in a private art studio. She grins from ear to ear, glad that things are turning in her favor.

When the phone call ends, she sits up straight and replays the conversation she had with Yuri about the pennies.

Maybe…

Yoona snaps her fingers and pulls open the bottom drawer of her desk. She grins, happy that there is a bundle of gray yarn there.

Let’s see if this works.

--

Yoona’s both excited and nervous for her first lesson, pondering on what Yuri will teach her. She arrives at the mansion and Seohyun opens the gates for her.

“The art studio is in the garden. Follow me, please.”

Seohyun leads her down a white cobbled stone pathway and then directs her to a building in the garden. With that, she returns back to the mansion.

Taking a deep breath, Yoona walks up the steps and opens the door.

It’s a lovely art studio, messy, but so lovely. Blank canvas after canvas decorates the walls while palettes and paint brushes and paint tubes sit on the shelves. Yoona gapes at how many colors and paintbrushes are in stock, lined up on the shelves. On the left wall, there are a few canvases covered with a white sheet. She wonders what sorts of paintings are hidden beneath, but she loses that thought as her eyes wander once again. As she finishes glancing around, her eyes travel to the middle of the room where Yuri stands.

Yuri has her hair tied up in a messy bun with random strands of hair sticking out when they should be behind her ear. Her white tank top is stained with multiple colors splotching here and there. One hand is holding a palette, the other lazily holding a paintbrush. She begins walking around a giant white sheet, dripping paint all over it. That is when Yoona realizes Yuri is doing contemporary art. Yuri seems to have not notice her at all.

“Professor?”

Yuri continues walking around.

“Don’t call me Professor.”

Yuri raises the paintbrush up and swipes it down, splashing the sheet with green.

“Er, then what should I call you?”

“Yuri.”

“Okay.”

Walking over to a nearby table, Yuri sets her tools down. Yoona starts to walk towards Yuri.

“I see you’re painting again.”

Yuri shakes her head. “It is not exactly what I wanted.” She wipes her hands on a towel, ridding herself of the wet paint that found its way onto her hands. “Are you ready for your lesson?”

“I think so.”

Yuri tosses the towel back to its original place and then gestures to the white canvas behind her with her thumb.

“Show me how you feel right now.”

“W-what?”

Yoona furrows her eyebrows together, confused by the command.

“On the canvas, convey to me everything you’re feeling right now.”

--

“No, that’s wrong.”

Yoona stills her hand and her breathing. It is the fourth time that Yuri has told her “That’s wrong.” in the last hour. It is her feelings, how should Yuri know what is wrong and right?

“I’m not sure how you want me to do this.”

Yuri stands behind her, arms crossed. Yoona turns around, facing her.

“Your objective is to show me your feelings.”

“But…”

Yoona bites her lip.

“What?”

“… If they are my feelings, then how are you supposed to know if I’m doing it right or wrong?”

“Because you’re not feeling it.”

“What?”

Yoona is so confused right now.

“Show me your feelings.”

Maybe she was right in the first place. Maybe Yuri was crazy. Maybe Key was wrong.

“What you’re saying is contradictory and confusing. I am showing you my feelings and this is how I feel.”

“Tell me, what feelings were you trying to show me?”

“Happiness. I am happy that I’m receiving a lesson.”

“Are you happy right now?”

Yoona’s face scrunches slightly.

“No, to be honest, I am a little upset that I’m doing… this wrong.”

She cringes at her brain’s inability to find a better word for “this.”

“Then show me.”

All these riddles are making her dizzy. Yoona lets out a frustrated groan and out of irritation, dips the paintbrush in red and swipes it in midair, splattering the canvas with a streak of red. She stares at what she has done and then turns around to look at Yuri.

“Good job.”

The gears slowly click together in Yoona’s head.

“If you are angry, then I expect you to be throwing a fit. If you are happy, I expect you to be grinning madly. Sad - frowning and maybe even crying, etc. If you want your viewer to truly see your painting, you must show them what you were feeling through the image.”

Yuri walks up, dipping her forefinger and middle finger into blue paint.

“You need to FEEL it.” She drags her hand across the whiteness, slowly. “Sometimes, literally.” Yuri then turns to look at Yoona. “Do you understand?”

Yoona nods and then turns back to look at the canvas with new eyes.

--

Yoona starts the biography off with basic questions.

“Where were you born?”

“Goyang, South Korea.”

“Birthday?”

“Dec. 5th, 1989.”

“Any siblings?”

“An older brother.”

Yoona writes down the answers.

“Family background?”

“Father is the CEO for Kwon Hospitality and Management, Mother is a university professor. Both have been in those occupations since I was a child. Brother recently joined the army.”

Yoona hums in response as she pens down the information, taking note of her wealthy background.

--

“So how’s the mentor?”

Key sits on the cafeteria table as Yoona sorts out a bundle of grey yarn in her lap. She doesn’t look up at him as she responds.

“Good. She’s interesting and I’ve learned a lot from her already.”

“Told you not to judge a book by its cover.”

Key sticks his tongue out at her.

“Yeah, yeah. You were right. I admit it.”

He grins cheekily and then watches her fingers work together with the bundle of yarn.

“What are you making?”

“You’ll see.”

“Did you take a weaving class that I don’t know about?”

He continues watching as she weaves the yarn together in a pattern.

“Haha, no. This is just a little… special project.”

“Oh, that’s good… Because you would fail if you turned that in.”

Next thing Key knows, he’s pushed off the table and Yoona continues weaving like nothing happened.

--

“Yuri, why are we standing under a freeway?”

The cars roar by and loud engine noises blast into her ear drums. Yoona cringes at the amount of noise entering her system. Yuri plants the easel into the ground and Yoona almost drops her supplies when she realizes why they’re out here.

“You’re going to paint right here.”

Before she can speak back, a semi truck honks it’s horn and the sound reverberates through their bodies.

“I’m not sure how you expect me to work with all this noise!” Yoona has to yell it and Yuri puts a hand up to her ear. “I said - I’m not sure how you expect me to work with all this noise!”

Yuri crosses her arms.

“Today’s lesson - getting out of your comfort zone.”

“Er, what does that have to do with art?”

“Oh, that answer should be self explanatory.”

Yoona furrows her eyebrows together.

What does that mean?

--

Half an hour in, Yoona’s ready to snap her paint brush in half. The roaring engines and screeching tires are too distracting for her to really work. She turns around to pout at Yuri who is sunbathing.

“Yuri, I can’t do this.”

The sentence causes Yuri to stand up and walk over to Yoona.

“I’ll tell you a secret.”

Then she motions with her finger for Yoona to come closer. Yoona scoots her feet a little closer to her mentor. Yuri then cups her hands around Yoona’s ear and speaks strong enough to overcome the noise, but soft enough to not hurt her ears.

“You’re not very comfortable in this atmosphere, right?”

Yoona nods her head.

“Exactly the point. You need to learn that everything and anything can be used to your advantage. Let the sounds engulf your ears and guide your hand. Remember lesson one? Let your feelings flow. Go on. Try it.”

Yoona nods her head, understanding what she means.

--

She returns home to a comfy bed and a sloppy grin on her face. Her ears feel like they’re blown out, but it doesn’t matter. The painting on her desk shows her good progress and she is satisfied.

--

Their weekends are spent together, sometimes lessons going on for hours, other times, for only a half hour. Lessons are usually taught in the art studio, unless it’s an outing thing like the comfort zone one, while biography questions are answered on the patio with refreshments.

Some days, Yoona learns nothing, but she’s okay with that. Those days are spent honing her skills.

The days where they take a break from the lessons, Yoona focuses on gathering more information for her biography.

Like today.

Except Yuri decides to change it up.

“Yoona.”

“Yes?”

Yoona drawls out the word as she writes down the new information Yuri has just given her about her hobbies.

“While I am glad I am helping you with your project, I am a little sad we have only been talking about me.”

“Oh, no this is good. This way I can finish -“

Yuri’s hand wraps around the pencil, pausing her writing.

“…I’d like it if I could get to know you as well.”

Yoona looks up at her, a small smile forming without her knowing.

“Oh… That would be good, too.”

Yuri smiles.

“Great.”

It’s the second time she’s seen Yuri’s genuine smile, and she finds it as charming as the first time.
